Picture: Jake Nowakowski<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Axed by KIIS FM<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jase and Lauren were dealt an almighty blow in November last year when they were told over the phone their KIIS 101.1 breakfast show, which they\u2019d been hosting together since 2021,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.news.com.au\/entertainment\/tv\/radio\/melbourne-radio-host-lauren-phillips-breaks-down-amid-brutal-axing\/news-story\/f1277226ba8cf5d61e32c756f38f3da3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">was being axed<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>ARN, the company that owns KIIS FM, had decided to ditch The Jase and Lauren Show and replace it in 2024 with The Kyle and Jackie O Show, which also airs on KIIS FM in Sydney.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lauren took the news the hardest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI was gutted,\u201d she told news.com.au.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI thought that was the end of my radio career.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cLate last year I was ready to leave the country and move overseas. I was like, \u2018I\u2019m out of here\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI felt pretty lost in the world,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jase was also pretty upset.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI wasn\u2019t angry that we got shafted, that\u2019s the industry,\u201d he told news.com.au.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Instead, he was upset with how the radio network handled the whole situation, and the effect it had on his workmates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI hated that&nbsp;<em>that<\/em>&nbsp;was their experience in radio, and how they were treated,\u201d he said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThat really, really shat me.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/image-88-1024x576.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-90634\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/image-88-1024x576.jpeg 1024w, https:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/image-88-300x169.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/image-88-768x432.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/image-88.jpeg 1279w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Kyle and Jackie O now broadcast in Melbourne and Sydney, with rumours Brisbane and Adelaide are next.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Nova to the rescue<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the end of 2023, Jase, Lauren, and their co-host, Clint Stanaway, thought their radio careers were over.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But just a few months later, in early 2024, the trio received a phone call from Nova 100 who told them they were interested in&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.news.com.au\/entertainment\/tv\/radio\/nova-announce-new-breakfast-duo-to-take-on-kiis-fm-hosts-kyle-and-jackie-o\/news-story\/2fcacc1de3949e12f92fb86b4d907d48\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reviving their breakfast show<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt happened very quickly and it started with a really honest conversation between the three of us (co-hosts),\u201d Jase told news.com.au.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe sat down together and said, \u2018let\u2019s have a chat about this, see how it feels, and if it doesn\u2019t feel right for us, let\u2019s all just walk away\u2019\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lauren admits she had some hesitations at first.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI had a pretty bad taste in my mouth and I was scared of that happening again,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe believed in each other and we believed in ourselves, but we were taking a product that we had been told (by ARN) wasn\u2019t good enough.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Those initial hesitations disappeared after a face-to-face meeting with the Nova bosses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe didn\u2019t have to sell ourselves to the execs at Nova,\u201d Lauren said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThey told us, \u2018we\u2019ve been listening to your show, we love the three of you, we want you guys.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI thought, \u2018oh my god, someone actually wants us and thinks we\u2019re good!\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThat was a real shift for me,\u201d she said. \u201cI was like, these people really believe in us, so let\u2019s do it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/image-89-1024x576.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-90635\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/image-89-1024x576.jpeg 1024w, https:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/image-89-300x169.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/image-89-768x432.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/image-89.jpeg 1280w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Jase Hawkins, Lauren Phillips and Clint Stanaway in their Nova studio. Picture: Supplied\/Nova<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Radio war begins<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When Jase and Lauren signed with Nova, it added another juicy element to what was already being dubbed \u201cMelbourne\u2019s radio war\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the start of the year, there was an incredible amount of interest in how Victorians would respond to The Kyle and Jackie O Show, and if the Sydney-based pair could out-rate the top two FM breakfast shows in Melbourne \u2013 Fox FM\u2019s Fifi, Fev and Nickand Gold FM\u2019s The Christian O\u2019Connell Show.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There was also interest in how Jase and Lauren would stack up against Kyle and Jackie O, the show that was ultimately responsible for them getting axed from KIIS FM.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jase and Lauren started on air on Nova 100 on March 8, with Kyle and Jackie O entering the Melbourne market on April 29.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The so-called \u201cwar\u201d got off to a nasty start when Kyle and Jackie O sent a promotional bus covered with pictures of their faces to one of Jase and Lauren\u2019s first Nova listener events.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the time, Lauren called the stunt \u201ca bit tasteless\u201d, while Jase accused Kyle of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.news.com.au\/entertainment\/tv\/radio\/you-shafted-usjase-and-lauren-fume-as-kyle-and-jackie-o-crash-their-show\/news-story\/d5641e7a283e75195aebd89e4dfbf8a9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u201cbully-like behaviour\u201d<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/image-90-1024x576.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-90636\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/image-90-1024x576.jpeg 1024w, https:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/image-90-300x169.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/image-90-768x432.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/image-90.jpeg 1280w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Not happy, Jan. Picture: David Crosling<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Reflecting on the incident all these months later, Jase told news.com.au: \u201cI think the behaviour from that camp (Kyle and Jackie O) could have been so much better.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Not long after the bus fiasco, Jase and Lauren made a conscious decision to be \u201cthe bigger person\u201d and ignore their radio rivals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Nova hosts instead focused on their own show which is guided by two simple mottos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cCheeky, not nasty, that pretty much sums us up,\u201d Lauren said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAnd \u2018a bit of smart with heart,\u2019\u201d Jase added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhat I mean by that is, I love when we can be mucking around and having the silliest content and then you go to an ad break, the news, and then you come back and we might have the most serious chat with a mum who had a kid overdose at a festival and she\u2019s passionate about pill testing in Victoria.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>And the winner is?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Listeners are clearly loving what Jase and Lauren are doing, because they absolutely smashed it in the latest round of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.news.com.au\/entertainment\/tv\/radio\/kyle-and-jackie-o-cop-ratings-blow-in-melbourne\/news-story\/ec1dcde18068f542d3e986fb1600d0fc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">radio ratings<\/a>&nbsp;which were released last week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Nova show gained 56,000 new listeners and now holds the title of \u2018the most listened to breakfast show in Melbourne\u2019.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They also leapfrogged Fox FM\u2019s Fifi, Fev and Nick to become the second highest rated FM breakfast show overall behind Gold FM\u2019s Christian O\u2019Connell.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The epic result moved Jase to tears.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI personally was quite emotional,\u201d he told news.com.au.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAfter everything we went through, to have an audience actually follow you from one station to another is quite big and personal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI honestly felt like for the first time, we belong.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jase and Lauren\u2019s incredible result was a bit of a \u201cf**k you\u201d to the ARN bosses who axed them last year, especially because Kyle and Jackie O failed to impress in the radio ratings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The KIIS FM hosts did pick up 48,000 new listeners, but failed to move up in the overall ratings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They\u2019re currently the sixth highest rated FM breakfast show with a 5.9 per cent audience share, compared to Jase and Lauren\u2019s 9.6 per cent share.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/image-91-1024x576.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-90637\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/image-91-1024x576.jpeg 1024w, https:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/image-91-300x169.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/image-91-768x432.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/image-91.jpeg 1280w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Here&#8217;s who&#8217;s winning Melbourne\u2019s radio war.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe had a lot of good mates over at KIIS FM reach out and say congratulations,\u201d Jase said about the recent ratings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThey saw first-hand how we were treated and they were so bloody happy for us.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When asked why their radio show seems to be resonating with listeners, Jase told news.com.au: \u201cI think there\u2019s a lot of shows out there trying to compete with each other and they\u2019re not actually being their genuine self.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s absolutely no bulls**t with our show,\u201d he said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cEverything is honest.
