{"id":87042,"date":"2024-07-15T12:31:33","date_gmt":"2024-07-15T02:31:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/?p=87042"},"modified":"2024-07-22T13:11:12","modified_gmt":"2024-07-22T03:11:12","slug":"freight-operators-will-buy-new-diesel-trains-if-governments-dont-back-green-alternatives","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/?p=87042","title":{"rendered":"Freight operators will buy new diesel trains if governments don\u2019t back green alternatives"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The future of Australian rail freight is at a \u201ccritical juncture\u201d, the industry says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Transporting cargo generally relies on diesel-powered trains, and with no plans on the horizon to electrify the vast sections of tacks connecting Australia\u2019s largest cities, the sector is worried operators will have little choice but to reinvest in diesel locomotives, ultimately harming its ability to decarbonise in coming decades.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Australasian Railway Association (ARA) is launching a report on potential decarbonisation on Monday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That report, developed by engineering consultancy GHD, says there has been a lack of planning from those in charge of rail infrastructure. It says without action, the rail freight sector could lose further ground to trucking, putting it at odds with Australia\u2019s climate target commitments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sending freight by rail is now a competitively sustainable option \u2013 generating up to 16 times fewer emissions than trucks and being only slightly less clean than domestic shipping. But this edge could disappear if the industry and governments don\u2019t commit to a decarbonisation plan while the rest of the economy and transport sector pursues that path.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Despite its sustainability advantages, rail freight has lost significant market share to trucking in recent decades, with the sector blaming governmental underinvestment in regional rail and high track access fees compared with what it sees as&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/australia-news\/2023\/jan\/29\/of-fumes-and-freight-why-australian-cargo-is-increasingly-being-sent-on-trucks-not-trains\">road charges for trucks<\/a>&nbsp;that don\u2019t cover the true cost of damage the industry does to roads and health.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">B-Doubles can also perform more direct deliveries and sending freight by rail is frequently slower \u2013 and blows out significantly when tracks are flood-damaged.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As a result,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/?p=91660\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"Time to reduce Australia\u2019s reliance on Road Freight and reduce emissions\">freight transported across Australia by rail has dwindled<\/a>\u00a0to minuscule levels. The share of non-bulk freight \u2013 including manufactured goods, produce and most other items \u2013 transported by rail in Australia has now dropped to 17% and just 11% across the eastern seaboard, according to industry figures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Between Melbourne and Sydney, just&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/?p=11688\" title=\"Only 2% of freight between Melbourne and Sydney goes by rail\">2% of freight is transported by rail,<\/a> down from about 40% in the 1970s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The ARA chief executive, Caroline Wilkie, said governments had worked on policies to drive the transition to electric cars, but the same couldn\u2019t be said for the rail industry. \u201cWithout urgent, collective action by government and industry, the transport sector will be Australia\u2019s biggest emitter by 2030, outpacing electricity and agriculture,\u201d Wilkie said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">About 90% of Australian rail\u2019s scope 1 and 2 emissions \u2013 emissions fully under a company\u2019s control and those from purchasing energy from outside sources \u2013 are from the energy used to propel trains, with diesel-powered locomotives \u201cby far the biggest contributor\u201d, the ARA report said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Across all rail in Australia, freight is the most significant contributor \u2013 responsible for 95% of rail\u2019s emissions. This is because the vast stretches of track connecting the country\u2019s largest cities which freight trains mostly travel on don\u2019t have overhead electrification.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p
