LUXEMBOURG\u2019s Chamber of Deputies unanimously approved two branches to the city\u2019s single route tramway on February 1. A total of 3.4km of new route will be built at a cost of \u20ac135m to serve planned neighbourhoods in the city\u2019s Hollerich and Kirchberg districts.<\/p>\n
Both branches could be extended in the future.<\/p>\n
The first double-track branch will diverge from the existing route near the Pont Grand-duchesse Charlotte-Pfaffenthal stop and run 2.3km to Kirchberg and the future Laangfur neighbourhood. The cost of this section, including three new stops, is \u20ac106m.<\/p>\n
Construction is due to start next year, with completion expected in 2027. A further extension to the existing LuxExpo stop via the planned Kuebebierg neighbourhood is also under consideration.<\/p>\n
The second branch, also double-track, will leave the existing tramway at the Central Station stop and run 1.1km to Hollerich. The cost of this section, including two new stops, is \u20ac29m. It is expected to open in 2028 and plans are under consideration for a further extension to Porte de Hollerich and Bouillon P+R.<\/p>\n
Construction is currently taking place at both ends of the existing Luxembourg Line. At the southern end a 3.9km extension from Lyc\u00e9e Bouneweg to the Gasperich district, with five stops, is expected to open this summer.<\/p>\n
It will be followed in early 2025 by a 3.7km northern extension, including two stops, from LuxExpo to Luxembourg Airport at Findel.<\/p>\n
Luxembourg\u2019s Ministry of Mobility says the newly-announced extensions mark “a significant milestone on multiple fronts.” It emphasises the importance of undertaking essential and large-scale projects as a public contracting authority against the backdrop of a crisis in certain sectors of the construction industry.<\/p>\n
