{"id":851,"date":"2023-04-30T09:33:39","date_gmt":"2023-04-29T23:33:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/?guid=38f654bb24e48175fdae1db1bd9a3bfd"},"modified":"2023-04-30T09:33:39","modified_gmt":"2023-04-29T23:33:39","slug":"passenger-rail-is-ripe-for-revival","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/?p=851","title":{"rendered":"Passenger rail is ripe for revival"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A rail advocacy group says new trains in the lower North Island are a good start, but there is room to do more.<\/p>\n<p>Eighteen new hybrid trains will be\u00a0deployed to K\u0101piti Coast and Wairarapa, to replace the current ones that date back to the 1970s.<\/p>\n<p>The trains will operate using electric wires, batteries, and fuel, in an effort to reduce emissions.<\/p>\n<p>Save Our Trains spokesperson, Paul Callister, said the announcement was positive news but trains were currently in hot demand across the globe so New Zealanders would be waiting a while for them to arrive.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s not going to be quick, I mean they&#8217;re not going to arrive tomorrow, this is a long-term investment,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;ve got to get in the queue.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Callister wanted to see improvements to passenger rail in other parts of the country too.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A rail advocacy group says new trains in the lower North Island are a good start, but there is room to do more.
