The deputy leader of the Greens<\/a>, Mehreen Faruqi, has hit back at claims Fatima Payman\u2019s resignation from Labor was orchestrated, insisting that Muslim women are often \u201cstereotyped\u201d as unable to make their own decisions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Faruqi said she had \u201cbeen in touch with Senator Payman over the past few weeks and also way before that\u201d and believed the first-term senator made up her own mind after \u201cfollowing her moral compass\u201d and listening to the community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI\u2019m very proud of her as another Muslim woman for standing strong on her convictions,\u201d Faruqi told the ABC\u2019s Insiders program on Sunday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Payman resigned from the Labor party on Thursday<\/a>, saying she was leaving with a heavy heart but a clear conscience as she argued her own government\u2019s response to the bloodshed in Gaza amounted to indifference.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
