{"id":74592,"date":"2024-06-28T10:34:19","date_gmt":"2024-06-28T00:34:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.railexpress.com.au\/?p=116720"},"modified":"2024-06-28T10:34:19","modified_gmt":"2024-06-28T00:34:19","slug":"new-operators-for-melbournes-tram-network","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/?p=74592","title":{"rendered":"New operators for Melbourne\u2019s tram network"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.railexpress.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/IMG_1945.jpg\" alt=\"\" style=\"float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;\"><figcaption>Image\/Prime Creative Media<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"text-align-justify\"><strong>Transport operators <a href=\"https:\/\/www.transdev.com\/en\/\">Transdev<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/johnholland.com.au\/\">John Holland<\/a> have formed a consortium to run Melbourne\u2019s world-famous <a href=\"https:\/\/www.railexpress.com.au\/melbourne-tram-operations-open-for-tender\/\">tram network<\/a> for the next nine years \u2013 which will improve reliability, deliver passengers more consistent real time information and better customer service.\u00a0<\/strong><span id=\"more-116720\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"text-align-justify\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">Minister for Public and Active Transport Gabrielle Williams today announced the Yarra Journey Makers consortia signed a $6.8 billion contract to operate the world\u2019s largest tram network, which manages 500 trams, 1,600 tram stops, 24 routes and more than 250 kilometres of double track.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"text-align-justify\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">Commencing on 1 December 2024, Transdev and John Holland will operate under the Yarra Trams brand and progressively deliver improvements to services and customer experience.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"text-align-justify\">Transdev brings a wealth of experience, operating<span lang=\"EN-US\"> large-scale networks across 19 locations around the world, including France and Spain, while John Holland operates light rail across Australia and is part of the consortium that run Melbourne&#8217;s metropolitan train network \u2013 Transdev John Holland also operate Region 9 buses in Sydney.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">Minister for Public and Active Transport Gabrielle Williams celebrated the announcement.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"text-align-justify\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u201cMelbourne is home to the largest tram network in the world and this new contract will make sure our trams continue to move Victorians around safely, quickly and easily,\u201d she said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u201cWe look forward to working with Transdev John Holland as we continue to modernise and improve the passenger experience on our iconic tram network.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"text-align-justify\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">The new contract has a focus on performance, with strict benchmarks and more monitoring points across day and night services \u2013 holding the operator to account to deliver reliable services, while making sure the right tram is used for the right trip.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"text-align-justify\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">The agreement will also roll out more accessible Next Generation Trams which will replace the longer serving high floor fleets \u2013 further modernising Melbourne\u2019s transport network before the Metro Tunnel opens to passengers in 2025.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"text-align-justify\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">During the contract term, new technology will be rolled out to provide passengers more consistent information in real time, including possible alternative transport options during disruptions and tailored updates for blind and low vision passengers in large text and text to speech.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"text-align-justify\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">There will also be more training for frontline staff to better support passengers with particular needs and customers who are culturally and linguistically diverse.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"text-align-justify\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">In a first for any Victorian public transport franchise, there will be board gender parity from day one.
