The Austrian national rail freight company Rail Cargo Group (RCG) started the upgrade of the rail terminal in Wels, roughly 30 kilometres southwest of Linz. The four loading tracks will be extended from 580 to 700 metres to accommodate longer block trains.<\/strong>
\n<\/span>The total investment for the terminal upgrade, which will be shared by RCG and the European Union, amounts to 68 million euros. The project is expected to be completed by 2027. Other than the track extension, the initiative also entails an additional connection to the west, towards Linz and Vienna, via the marshalling yard in Wels. \u201cThe work has no impact on the timetable\u201d, the company pointed out.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe existing in-gate as well as the administration and customs buildings will be demolished and rebuilt in a different location\u201d, RCG explained. This action would provide additional space for the extended tracks and parking areas. The project is divided into two phases. During the first one, all roads and access routes around the new terminal will be adapted. During the second phase, which will start at the end of February, access roads to the terminal will be only partially open.<\/p>\n
