Supplied<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One option raised by the Department of Treasury and Finance is to push back some of the project\u2019s major works, spreading the spending on SRL East over a broader time frame.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But the government insists the project will continue, with tunnelling to start in 2026 \u2014 the same year as the next state election \u2014 and the line open to passengers in 2035.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Saturday Herald Sun can also reveal that the next major contract \u2014 for tunnelling between Glen Waverley and Box Hill \u2014 is set to be inked this month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Construction industry sources said they had been told \u201cthe project is not in danger and we should proceed as if there\u2019s no change\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So far, the Albanese Government has provided $2.2bn for the SRL East, and has said there would only be more cash provided if independent assessments showed it was \u201cvalue for money\u201d.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Allan Government has locked in $11.8bn, leaving a funding black hole worth up to $20bn.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/image-26.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-58895\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/image-26.jpeg 1024w, https:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/image-26-300x225.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/image-26-768x576.jpeg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>The Allan government has locked in $11.8bn for the project. Picture: NCA NewsWire \/ Wayne Taylor<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While some of the gap could be filled with taxes on property and developments around stations, where suburban skyscrapers of up to 40 storeys would be allowed, there is a broad understanding that so-called \u201cvalue capture\u201d taxes would not meet the aim of funding a third a project, worth up to $11.5bn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s just not going to happen.
