{"id":651,"date":"2023-10-27T04:30:18","date_gmt":"2023-10-26T18:30:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/?guid=f00536031188cd25c9b8bb60a28e0e80"},"modified":"2023-10-27T04:30:18","modified_gmt":"2023-10-26T18:30:18","slug":"could-christchurch-be-another-auckland-without-better-planning","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/?p=651","title":{"rendered":"Could Christchurch be another Auckland without better planning"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>An aspirational\u00a0plan for the growth of Greater Christchurch\u00a0will fail unless improving transport choices is at its core, submitters say.<\/p>\n<p>Fiona Bennett, a Christchurch resident who spoke to the Greater Christchurch\u2019s spatial plan hearing panel on Thursday, said the city needed to grow \u201cup, not out\u201d. \u201cWe need to protect our natural spaces, not build all over them,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>The plan as a whole is about figuring out how Christchurch and nearby towns can cope with an expected 40% population increase by 2030. Greater Christchurch\u2019s urban growth committee wants to figure out how to meet future housing demand, while connecting future residents to amenities, protecting the environment and reducing carbon emissions.<\/p>\n<p>The Greater Christchurch Partnership group (made up of local and central government and mana whenua representatives) expects a mass rapid transit system will be built by 2030 to move the estimated 700,000 residents around, absolving them of a reliance on private vehicles.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>An aspirational\u00a0plan for the growth of Greater Christchurch\u00a0will fail unless improving transport choices is at its core, submitters say.
