The government won\u2019t step in to regulate ferry fares on the downtown Auckland to Waiheke route even though its been deemed an integral part of Auckland\u2019s public transport network.<\/p>\n
A\u00a0Waka Kotahi \/ New zealand Transport Agency recommendation to\u00a0outgoing Minister of Transport David Parker from September was released under the Official Information Act on Friday.<\/p>\n
It shows that although the ferry service was deemed integral, criteria were not met for fares to be regulated.<\/p>\n
The final advice comes after years of reviews following\u00a0strong criticism from Waiheke\u00a0residents over steep fares, long queues and service cancellations.<\/p>\n
Waiheke Local Board chair Cath Handley said the advice has serious implications for the island\u2019s community which \u201calready faces significantly higher than average petrol costs, $25,000 lower than median household income, and the highest rate per capita of\u00a0homelessness\u00a0in Auckland\u201d.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
