Former Premier Daniel Andrews has controversially received the nation\u2019s highest honour for his service to Victoria despite presiding over deadly Covid errors,<\/a> imposing the world\u2019s longest hard lockdown and leaving the state with crippling debts.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The award \u2013 the Companion of the Order of Australia (AC) \u2013 has been slammed by families of pandemic victims <\/a>after 768 people died due to the Andrews Government\u2019s botched hotel quarantine program and bungled contact tracing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mr Andrews, who has never properly owned up to any of his mistakes<\/a>, was one of just six Australians to be awarded the AC as part of this year\u2019s King\u2019s Birthday honours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The longest serving Victorian Labor premier <\/a>was recognised for his \u201ceminent service to the people and parliament of Victoria, to public health, to policy and regulatory reform, and to infrastructure development\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n

News of his award, officially announced at 10pm on Sunday, leaked out on social media last week, prompting widespread anger and discussion in political and civic circles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The office of Australia\u2019s Governor-General David Hurley refused to reveal who nominated Mr Andrews, but a spokesman said the Council for the Order of Australia \u2013 an independent body of 19 people \u2013 gave the final recommendation on who should be given the award.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The council is chaired by KPMG partner Shelley Reys AO and its Victorian representative is the state\u2019s top bureaucrat, Department of Premier and Cabinet secretary Jeremi Moule.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mr Moule was appointed to the premier\u2019s department by Mr Andrews.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
