To the west, the land is flatter and redder with less vegetation.\" style=\"transform: scale(1); transform-origin: 50% 50%; object-position: 50% 50%; object-fit: cover;\" block_context=\"nasa-block\" loading=\"eager\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some 27 million years ago, a volcano in what\u2019s now southeastern Arizona unleashed a spectacular series of eruptions, strewing more than 1,000 times as much volcanic material across the landscape as <a href=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/earth\/earth-observatory\/world-of-change\/mt-st-helens\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Mount St. Helens<\/a> did in 1980.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The explosive eruptions blanketed the region, part of the <a href=\"https:\/\/chiricahuaapachenation.org\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Chiricahua Apache Nation\u2019s<\/a> traditional lands, with <a href=\"https:\/\/education.nationalgeographic.org\/resource\/volcanic-ash\/\" rel=\"noopener\">ash<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/science\/pumice\" rel=\"noopener\">pumice<\/a>. Layered into this were massive <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usgs.gov\/programs\/VHP\/pyroclastic-flows-move-fast-and-destroy-everything-their-path\" rel=\"noopener\">pyroclastic flows<\/a> that hardened into deposits of <a href=\"https:\/\/pubs.geoscienceworld.org\/gsa\/gsabulletin\/article-abstract\/66\/10\/1215\/4652\/WELDED-TUFFS-OF-CHIRICAHUA-NATIONAL-MONUMENT?redirectedFrom=fulltext\" rel=\"noopener\">welded rhyolitic tuff<\/a> that in some areas were nearly 1,600 feet (500 meters) thick, about three times the height of the Washington Monument. As the magma chamber emptied, the ground above it collapsed, leaving a gaping depression\u2014the <a href=\"https:\/\/azgs.arizona.edu\/formation-turkey-creek-caldera-se-arizona\" rel=\"noopener\">Turkey Creek caldera<\/a>\u2014that was roughly 12 miles (19 kilometers) wide and 4,900 feet (1,500 meters) deep.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An array of geologic processes, including <a href=\"https:\/\/education.nationalgeographic.org\/resource\/erosion\/\" rel=\"noopener\">erosion<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/education.nationalgeographic.org\/resource\/weathering\/\" rel=\"noopener\">weathering<\/a>, gradually sculpted the welded layer of tuff into the collection of dramatic spires, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/places\/000\/life-of-hoodoos-wayside.htm\" rel=\"noopener\">hoodoos<\/a>, and canyons that visitors to the caldera area encounter today.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Apache called the area \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/media\/photo\/gallery-item.htm?pg=1828948&#038;id=c011ee45-155d-451f-67ef-f437672c5203&#038;%23038;gid=BD6DA859-155D-451F-67A3EF3D31F27DE6\" rel=\"noopener\">The Land of the Standing-Up Rocks<\/a>\u201d for good reason. Hiking through <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/thingstodo\/lower-rhyolite-canyon-trail.htm\" rel=\"noopener\">Rhyolite Canyon<\/a> or driving through <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/thingstodo\/bonita-canyon-drive.htm\" rel=\"noopener\">Bonita Canyon<\/a> means encountering a dizzying maze of rock pinnacles, some hundreds of feet tall. Others, like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/places\/big-balanced-rock.htm\" rel=\"noopener\">Big Balanced Rock<\/a>, have surprisingly large boulders precariously perched on top. Meanwhile, those at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/media\/photo\/gallery-item.htm?pg=1828948&#038;id=ccb6818a-72d7-4ea5-8109-c82dfbad51e1&#038;%23038;gid=BD6DA859-155D-451F-67A3EF3D31F27DE6\" rel=\"noopener\">Heart of Rocks <\/a>and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/chir\/learn\/historyculture\/massai-point.htm\" rel=\"noopener\">Massai Point<\/a> are gathered into groups of hundreds.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The area was designated a national monument in 1924 to preserve its remarkable geology. In October 2026, it was redesignated as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/chir\/index.htm\" rel=\"noopener\">Chiricahua National Park<\/a> (pronounced <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/chir\/faqs.htm#:~:text=Chiricahua%20is%20pronounced%20cheery%20-%20cow%20-%20ah.%20Think%20of%20a%20cheery%20cow%20instead%20of%20a%20happy%20cow.\" rel=\"noopener\">cheery-cow-ah<\/a>). The <a href=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/mission\/landsat\/oli\/\" rel=\"noopener\">OLI<\/a> (Operational Land Imager) on <a href=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/mission\/landsat-9\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/mission\/landsat-9\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Landsat 9<\/a> captured this cloud-free image of the new national park on July 2, 2026.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Individual rock spires are too small to distinguish, but the eroding rhyolitic tuff landscape appears gray. Stream valleys dense with trees and other vegetation, including Rhyolite Canyon and Bonita Canyon, snake across the landscape. With four biogeographic regions converging in the park\u2014the Sonoran Desert, the Chihuahuan Desert, the Rocky Mountains, and the Sierra Madre\u2014it is a haven of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/chir\/learn\/nature\/plants.htm\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/chir\/learn\/nature\/plants.htm\" rel=\"noopener\">plant diversity<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Among the 1,000 species growing within the park\u2019s varied desert, grassland, chaparral, deciduous forest, and coniferous forest ecosystems are agaves, prickly pear cacti, yuccas, manzanita, pine, fir, cypress, sycamore, juniper, and oak. The park\u2019s location within the Chiricahua Mountains puts it among several \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fs.usda.gov\/wildflowers\/beauty\/Sky_Islands\/whatare.shtml\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.fs.usda.gov\/wildflowers\/beauty\/Sky_Islands\/whatare.shtml\" rel=\"noopener\">sky islands<\/a>\u201d in Arizona\u2014isolated mountain ranges that emerge from the surrounding desert \u201csea.\u201d According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/chir\/learn\/nature\/sky-islands.htm\" rel=\"noopener\">National Park Service<\/a>, the range\u2019s highest point (outside the park) rises 2,986 meters (9,795 feet) above sea level, more than 1,800 meters above the surrounding valley.<\/p>\n<div style=\"height:33px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>NASA Earth Observatory image by Lauren Dauphin, using Landsat data from the\u00a0<\/em><a href=\"http:\/\/earthexplorer.usgs.gov\/\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>U.S. Geological Survey<\/em><\/a><em>.
