Passengers at Wellington station will benefit from easier, step-free journeys as work begins work on a major accessibility upgrade next month.<\/p>\n
Funded through the Department for Transport\u2019s Access for All programme, and delivered by Network Rail, the scheme will provide two new lifts and a new footbridge, creating an accessible route between both platforms and the station entrances.<\/p>\n
Work will start on Thursday 5 November 2026 and while there will be some temporary impact on walking routes and car parking, there will be no disruption to train services as a result of the work.<\/p>\n
The new lifts and footbridge will make journeys easier for disabled passengers, people with limited mobility, and those travelling with luggage or pushchairs.<\/p>\n
The bridge will also connect directly with Wellington bus station, making it easier to transfer between train and bus services. Network Rail is working in partnership with Telford & Wrekin Council, which is contributing the funding towards the bus station link.<\/p>\n
West Midlands Railway, which manages the station, are closely involved and the new facilities are expected to open in autumn 2027.<\/p>\n
Ahead of work starting passengers, residents, and station users are invited to a drop-in information event at Wellington Library on Tuesday 27 October from 4pm to 6pm. Members of the project team will be available to explain the improvements, discuss the temporary changes at the station, and answer questions.<\/p>\n
Adam Checkley, engineering director for Network Rail Central route, said: \u201cThe new lifts and footbridge will make a real difference at Wellington, giving more passengers the freedom and confidence to travel independently. The direct link to the bus station will also make it easier to connect between train and bus services.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis is a great example of working with partners to provide an improved railway that supports the local community and better connects with the wider transport network. We\u2019re pleased to be starting construction soon and that we will keep people moving throughout, with no disruption to trains.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019d encourage passengers and local residents to come along to our drop-in event to meet the team, find out more, and ask any questions they have about this exciting project.\u201d<\/p>\n
Jonny Wiseman, customer experience director at West Midlands Railway, said: \u201cProviding an accessible railway is a key priority for us, so we are pleased work at Wellington is set to begin in November. While these works are carried out, we will continue to run train services as usual, with some changes to parking and walking routes. We look forward to the works completing next year, delivering better station access and simpler connections to local buses.\u201d<\/p>\n
To allow construction to take place, part of the station car park will be used for a site compound, temporarily reducing the number of parking spaces available. Passengers are advised to consider using the nearby Victoria Road South car park.<\/p>\n
Accessible parking bays will be relocated to an alternative location within the station car park. A different walking route between the car park and station will also be in place. Passengers should follow the signs directing them to the relocated bays and station entrance.<\/p>\n
