But in September and October 2026, as drought gripped New Guinea (sometimes called Papua) amid a strong <a href=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/earth\/earth-observatory\/el-nino-is-underway\/\" rel=\"noopener\">El Ni\u00f1o<\/a>, fires scorched the island and smoke shrouded large swaths of it for weeks.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nesdis.noaa.gov\/our-satellites\/currently-flying\/joint-polar-satellite-system\/visible-infrared-imaging-radiometer-suite-viirs\" rel=\"noopener\">VIIRS<\/a> (Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite) on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nesdis.noaa.gov\/our-satellites\/currently-flying\/joint-polar-satellite-system\" rel=\"noopener\">NOAA-20<\/a> satellite captured this image of thick smoke streaming from the southern part of the island on October 11, 2026. In recent weeks, soaring levels of air pollution delayed and <a href=\"https:\/\/infopublik.id\/kategori\/bencana\/993542\/karhutla-ganggu-2458-penerbangan-asap-meluas-hingga-sulawesi-dan-sumatra-utara?utm_source=chatgpt.com\" rel=\"noopener\">canceled flights<\/a>, closed schools, and prompted officials in some areas to <a href=\"https:\/\/papua.antaranews.com\/berita\/769457\/pemkot-jayapura-imbau-lansia-gunakan-masker-cegah-ispa\" rel=\"noopener\">urge children and older people<\/a> to wear masks.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSometimes smoke that has drifted into the convection of nearby thunderstorms will get washed out or lofted up into the upper troposphere, but a lot of smoke stays near the surface and causes air quality problems,\u201d said Robert Field, an associate research scientist at NASA\u2019s Goddard Institute for Space Studies and Columbia University. \u201cIt\u2019s a horrible situation.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to the <a href=\"http:\/\/globalfiredata.org\/faq.html\" rel=\"noopener\">Global Fire Emissions Database<\/a> (GFED), a fire emissions monitoring system, fires in Papua New Guinea, on the eastern half of the island, had released nearly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.globalfiredata.org\/current\/countries\/Oceania\/Papua_New_Guinea.png?v=1792583697416\" rel=\"noopener\">32 megatons<\/a> of carbon by October 19, more than any other year\u00a0on record at that point in the year. \u201cEmissions are already much higher than the 2015 total for the year, and it\u2019s very likely that this will become the highest year on record for Papua New Guinea, even surpassing 1997,\u201d said Guido van der Werf, a fire scientist at Wageningen University &#038; Research.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On the Indonesian side, sometimes called West New Guinea or Indonesian Papua, carbon emissions exceeded <a href=\"https:\/\/www.globalfiredata.org\/current\/subnational\/indonesia_islands\/Papua.png?v=1792583535974\" rel=\"noopener\">35 megatons<\/a>, the third highest after 2015 and 1997, other El Ni\u00f1o years with severe fires. Van der Werf led the development of GFED, a satellite-driven modeling framework that uses a mix of <a href=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/earth\/earth-observatory\/remote-sensing\/\" rel=\"noopener\">remote sensing<\/a>, vegetation characteristics, and other information to estimate the extent of vegetation fires and the emissions over nearly three decades.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Unusually dry weather\u2014a byproduct of El Ni\u00f1o <a href=\"https:\/\/www.climate.gov\/news-features\/understanding-climate\/el-nino-and-la-nina-frequently-asked-questions\" rel=\"noopener\">shifting rainfall patterns<\/a>\u2014has primed ecosystems across the island to burn. The southernmost part of Papua New Guinea, dominated by relatively fire-prone savannas and grasslands of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oneearth.org\/ecoregions\/trans-fly-savanna-and-grasslands\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Trans-Fly region<\/a>, went more than 90 consecutive days without rain, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pngmet.gov.pg\/climate\/drought-monitoring\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Papua New Guinea\u2019s National Weather Service<\/a>. Since August, parts of the region have seen precipitation of roughly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cpc.ncep.noaa.gov\/products\/international\/drought\/precip\/img\/Perc_60day_Global.png\" rel=\"noopener\">5 to 10 percent<\/a> of normal, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cpc.ncep.noaa.gov\/products\/international\/drought\/precip.shtml\" rel=\"noopener\">the weather service\u2019s<\/a> data. Local news outlets report that drought is causing <a href=\"https:\/\/jubi.id\/animha\/2026\/kekeringan-ancam-papua-selatan-padi-berisiko-gagal-panen\/\" rel=\"noopener\">crop failures<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenational.com.pg\/water-shortage-hits-nuku\/\" rel=\"noopener\">water shortages<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/pnghausbung.com\/education-department-issues-emergency-guidelines-as-el-ni-o-drought-continues\/\" rel=\"noopener\">school disruptions<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In this normally wet part of the world, people ignite the vast majority of fires, researchers say. Crop fires, pasture maintenance, deforestation and land clearing, and hunting are all common reasons people burn in New Guinea.
