This year, a drought accompanying El Ni\u00f1o has left the Amazon rainforest primed to burn, and scientists say the region has entered the early stages of what they think will be a long and severe fire season.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Starting in September 2026, satellites detected sharp increases in fire activity and smoke emissions in the central and eastern Amazon, visible in fire and emissions monitoring platforms including NASA\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/firms.modaps.eosdis.nasa.gov\/map\/#d:24hrs;@0.0,0.0,3.0z\" rel=\"noopener\">Fire Information for Resource Management System<\/a> (FIRMS), the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.globalfiredata.org\/current.html\" rel=\"noopener\">Global Fire Emissions Database<\/a> (GFED), and <a href=\"https:\/\/go.nasa.gov\/3VyDZhr\" rel=\"noopener\">NASA Worldview<\/a>. The region with elevated fire activity stretches from forests surrounding the commercial and transportation centers of Manaus and Santar\u00e9m to the mouth of the Amazon River.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When the <a href=\"https:\/\/modis.gsfc.nasa.gov\/about\/\" rel=\"noopener\">MODIS<\/a> (Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer) on NASA\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/mission\/aqua\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Aqua<\/a> satellite captured this image of smoke streaming from fires on both sides of the Amazon River on October 12, 2026, heavy smoke socked in Manaus, the capital of the Brazilian state of Amazonas. That day, city officials <a href=\"https:\/\/www.manaus.am.gov.br\/semcom\/nota-eventos-suspensos-2\/\" rel=\"noopener\">reported<\/a> extremely poor air quality, with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/pm-pollution\/particulate-matter-pm-basics\" rel=\"noopener\">fine particulate matter<\/a> (PM<sub>2.5<\/sub>) values above 135 micrograms per cubic meter, the second-worst rating on a regional <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.br\/mma\/pt-br\/assuntos\/meio-ambiente-urbano-recursos-hidricos-qualidade-ambiental\/qualidade-do-ar\/indice-de-qualidade-do-ar-iqar\" rel=\"noopener\">air quality index<\/a>. The pall disrupted daily life in a city of more than 2 million people. Schools closed, and citywide events and children\u2019s sports leagues were canceled as officials warned of hazardous air quality, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/brazil-amazon-manaus-wildfires-5c35f5245cd2cc66dfb36722a416b363\" rel=\"noopener\">news reports<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The burning around Santar\u00e9m and Manaus is part of a \u201ccascade\u201d of fire in the tropics that accompanies the disrupted rainfall patterns of an <a href=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/earth\/explore\/el-nino\/\" rel=\"noopener\">El Ni\u00f1o<\/a>, said Douglas Morton, an Earth system scientist based at NASA\u2019s Goddard Space Flight Center. The pattern begins along the equator with drought and <a href=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/missions\/aqua\/peatland-fires-darken-skies-in-indonesia\/\" rel=\"noopener\">peat fires in Indonesia<\/a>, followed by elevated fire activity in this part of the Amazon. Morton and colleagues from the University of California, Irvine; Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam; and the University of Maryland detailed the pattern in a <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1038\/s41558-017-0014-8\" rel=\"noopener\">2017 study<\/a> following the destructive fire season that accompanied the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.climate.gov\/news-features\/understanding-climate\/2015-state-climate-el-ni%C3%B1o-came-saw-and-conquered\" rel=\"noopener\">2015\u20132016 El Ni\u00f1o<\/a>. They also saw the pattern play out in 2023.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A swell of fire in the tropics riding the 2026 El Ni\u00f1o has followed the pattern. Drought, fire, and smoke have smothered parts of Indonesia since August, with <a href=\"https:\/\/jakartaglobe.id\/news\/indonesia-wildfire-burns-homes-displaces-hundreds\" rel=\"noopener\">hundreds of homes razed<\/a> in October and thick smoke <a href=\"https:\/\/go.nasa.gov\/4i2Sf9z\" rel=\"noopener\">blanketing whole islands<\/a> most days.\u00a0\u201cNow, in the Amazon, we\u2019re seeing the second domino in the cascade fall,\u201d Morton said, referring to the uptick in fires that has begun in Par\u00e1 and Amazonas.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Morton and his colleagues expect the next wave of fire to hit farther north in November and December in the Brazilian states of Roraima, northern Par\u00e1, and Amap\u00e1, as well as parts of Venezuela, Guyana, and Suriname. Finally, around August and September 2027, he said, drought and fire risk will peak in the southern Amazon regions of Brazil and Paraguay.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt\u2019s so striking\u2014and frustrating\u2014that this is happening all over again,\u201d said Morton, adding that many of the same forests that burned during the El Ni\u00f1o events in 2023 and 2015 are burning again. Forest fires in these rainforests are known to cause especially serious ecological damage because most species are not adapted to fire. It\u2019s likely that some of the forest fires will burn even more intensely this time because the earlier fires partially charred trees, degrading the forest and making what remained more susceptible to burning, he added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Morton expects the fires around Santar\u00e9m and Manaus to continue burning until the rainy season arrives in December 2026 or January 2027. For the regions to the north and south, there is still time to prepare. \u201cGiven the intensity of this El Ni\u00f1o, this really is the year for people to avoid burning at all costs,\u201d Morton said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s so wet in the Brazilian Amazon that lightning ignites <a href=\"http:\/\/dx.doi.org\/10.1088\/1748-9326\/ae3786\" rel=\"noopener\">less than 1 percent<\/a> of fires, so the vast majority of fires currently burning there were started by people, Morton said. But this year\u2019s drought, worsened by El Ni\u00f1o, has been intense. Brazil\u2019s National Institute of Meteorology reported that Manaus rainfall levels were 95 percent less than normal in <a href=\"https:\/\/portal.inmet.gov.br\/noticias\/nota-sobre-os-destaques-meteorol%C3%B3gicos-de-agosto-de-2026\" rel=\"noopener\">August<\/a> and 60 percent less than normal in <a href=\"https:\/\/portal.inmet.gov.br\/noticias\/nota-sobre-os-destaques-meteorol%C3%B3gicos-de-setembro-de-2026\" rel=\"noopener\">September<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The large fires in this region began as management fires\u2014clearing shrubs from pastures or crops from fields, for instance\u2014but have escaped and are now burning freely through the parched understory of the rainforest, he added. Analysis of satellite observations indicates there are 50 to 70 uncontrolled fires burning in the Santar\u00e9m region alone, said Shane Coffield, a University of Maryland assistant research scientist at NASA Goddard.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As part of a <a href=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/earth-science\/earth-action\/\" rel=\"noopener\">NASA Earth Action project<\/a>, Coffield is mining fire observations from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.earthdata.nasa.gov\/data\/instruments\/viirs\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.earthdata.nasa.gov\/data\/instruments\/viirs\" rel=\"noopener\">VIIRS<\/a> (Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite) to identify fires that didn\u2019t meet the threshold for inclusion in official data products distributed by FIRMS. He plans to share the locations of these \u201ccandidate fires\u201d with scientists at <a href=\"https:\/\/mapbiomas.org\/en\/\" rel=\"noopener\">MapBiomas<\/a>, a multi-institutional network comprising universities, NGOs, and technology companies that maps fires and land-use change in the Amazon.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cFor the area around Santar\u00e9m, we\u2019ve identified about 40 percent more fires than you\u2019ll see in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.earthdata.nasa.gov\/data\/tools\/firms\" rel=\"noopener\">active fire<\/a> counts from FIRMS,\u201d said Coffield.
