Wagga
\nWagga SM residence – Plans<\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

Sometimes
\none gets some information, that causes a change of focus.  <\/span> <\/span>Such
\nis the case with the Wagga Wagga Station Master Residence.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

I had
\nalways known that this building was a must for the Wagga layout, although it
\nwasn\u2019t a priority.  <\/span>This all changed
\nrecently.  <\/span>The June 2023 Australian Railway
\nHistory had a long article by Jim Longworth on the Main southern line
\nconstruction, and a further article on Gerogery station by Chris Banger has a
\nplan of the SM residence there.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

The
\nGerogery SM residence was built around 
\n<\/span>1880, and was very similar to Wagga Wagga SM residence. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The other factor, that really dictated the
\nchange of plans was that my Taubmanns \u201cBamboo Cane\u201d colour sample pot bought at
\nBunnings was starting to go off, and this colour is the colour I want for the
\nWagga SM residence, as used on the Wagga station, as well as the Docker Street
\ngatekeeper cottage made last month. <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

If I can build the residence quickly, and use
\nthe paint before it becomes unusable, it would save around $9 cost to get a new
\nsample pot of the paint.  <\/span>Every dollar
\ncounts<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

Making the
\nPlan<\/o:p><\/span><\/u><\/p>\n

Before I
\ncommit to cutting styrene, I needed to make plans of the SM residence<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

The
\nGerogery SM plan in the June ARH was little more than a thumbnail, and when
\nenlarged, the dimensions were impossible to read.  <\/span>This was a problem to scale the plan to
\nHO.  <\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

Sixmaps
\naerial view of Wagga Wagga (better resolution than Google)  <\/span>gave a scale to see the dimensions of the
\nroof, although the roof edges of the image are a bit fuzzy.  <\/span>However, from that measurement, it was
\npossible to compute the height of the walls.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

With that
\nknowledge, I could have then enlarged the Gerogery plan to HO, and maybe that
\nwould have worked, but there were some \u201cfunnies\u201d in the plan that didn\u2019t make
\nsense.  <\/span>One of them was an inconsistency
\nin the roof \u2013 the ridgeline wasn\u2019t in the middle of the roof, and the rear wall
\nand the right hand side wall were different widths.  <\/span>.The aerial view of the roof seemed to
\nconfirm the plan.  <\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

The plans
\nalso didn\u2019t match my pictures taken of the residence, taken over the
\nyears.  <\/span>The add-ons, and the chimney
\nheights also were different.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

So, I
\nthought I would draw up the plans in HO, something that I did for the
\ngatekeeper cottage<\/span><\/p>\n

After
\nstarting the drawing (and making a lot of drafting errors), I remembered that
\nWagga City council had an online website, containing high resolution aerial
\nimages.  <\/span>Just a quick look at the roof of
\nthe SM residence showed much more detail. 
\n<\/span>And the 2016 image gave a hint of the previously hidden western (rear)
\nwall.  <\/span>It also had a better scale than
\nsix-maps, and a remeasure of the roof dimensions showed up a small error in my
\noriginal scale. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

And I still
\nhad a problem.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

The rear
\nside of the SM residence was an educated guess. 
\n<\/span>So, my idea would be to make the cottage in subassemblies \u2013 with the
\nextra constructions added over the years, made as a subassembly that could be
\nreworked if better information comes to hand <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

Just as I
\nwas prepared to publish this blogpost, I got word that a new booklet of the
\nTumbarumba Branch was just produced, and copies were available at the Rail
\nHeritage museum at Wagga station.  <\/span>As I
\nhad to travel to Wagga for a medical, it made sense to go via the Museum to
\ncollect the book.  <\/span>And whilst I was
\nthere, I would have another attempt to get pictures of the rear of the SM
\nresidence.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

Well, my
\nluck was in.  <\/span>The occupants of the
\nResidence were in the backyard, and a quick discussion gave me permission to
\nactually view the rear.  <\/span>I did take a
\ncouple of pictures for my reference, but for privacy reasons, I will not include
\nthem on my blog.  <\/span>However, I now have the
\ninformation I needed to correct my plans.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

And rather
\nthan redraw the plans (again) in full, I would just cover the wrong bits with
\npaper, redraw that area, and rescan.  Each sheet was on A4<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

About the only guess I got right was the door, and window on the end of the extension<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n

There is also a lot of pipework, and other details that I have not drawn – but I plan to add these during the construction of my model<\/span><\/p>\n

I suspect
\nall of this would have been a lot easier if I had drafted my plans on computer,
\nusing say, Corel draw.  <\/span>I bought Version
\n12 of Corel a long time ago, but never learnt the package.  <\/span>A skill in Corel is something that could be
\nused to replicate the lacy ironwork on the front, similar to Ross Balderson\u2019s
\nefforts with the Wagga Wagga station model.  <\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

My version
\nof the plans does not have the roof inconsistency, as to try and replicate that
\nexactly would just complicate my model build. 
\n<\/span>It is a compromise I can live with.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

Addendum<\/o:p><\/span><\/u><\/p>\n

After
\nsending out my preliminary sketches, I got an email from Bob (with thanks), with a number of
\nTIF files showing the SM residence at Wellington, NSW.  <\/span>Very similar to Gerogery’s SM residence plans,
\nalthough some differences with the chimneys. 
\n<\/span>But the Wellington plan has clear dimensions, and could have saved a lot
\nof guesswork.  <\/span>The Wellington plan also
\nhas the roof inconsistency\u2026.anyone want to comment?<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

And, I
\nwould like to know the thinking in 1880 as to why Gerogery station gets a grand
\nSM residence,  <\/span>Gerogery was only ever a
\nsmall village, and as far as I am aware, not going to be a junction station
\nwith branchlines, unlike Culcairn just to the north.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

Conclusion<\/o:p><\/span><\/u><\/p>\n

The SM
\nresidence is going to be a lot larger than I had initially envisaged, but I still
\nhope I can fit it onto the Wagga station baseboard area.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

Now to
\nstart cutting styrene.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n
