The work will help water drain away from the railway more effectively, reducing the risk of flooding and weather-related delays.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Effective drainage is essential to a safe and reliable railway. If water builds up beneath the track, the track bed can become waterlogged and the track can move, potentially leading to speed restrictions or line closures while repairs are carried out. Keeping drainage systems clear also helps extend the life of the track, supports smoother journeys and reduces the need for future maintenance.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The wider \u00a37.1 million programme also included:&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Installing more than 3.2km of new track at Heaton North, Morpeth and Shortridge.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Replacing or refurbishing eight sets of points at Heaton North, Morpeth, Alnmouth and Tweedmouth.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Renewing 1.5km of overhead line equipment to support more reliable electric train services.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Carrying out vegetation management to protect railway infrastructure and keep signals visible.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Completing essential safety inspections of track, points and structures along the route.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.prgloo.com\/media\/dee917de91dc446daab70bbe506a01cc?width=580&amp;height=580\" alt=\"Scremerston drainage collage\" style=\"aspect-ratio:1.8296529968454258;width:580px;height:auto\" title=\"Scremerston drainage collage\"\/><\/figure>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>John Grainger, joint head of performance, Network Rail and LNER<\/strong><strong>, said:<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMuch of the railway\u2019s drainage lies out of sight, but it plays a vital role in keeping trains moving safely and reliably.
