But during an <a href=\"https:\/\/asapdata.arc.nasa.gov\/sensors\/master\/data\/flt_html\/2668100.html\" rel=\"noopener\">August 11 flight<\/a> over the <a href=\"https:\/\/inciweb.wildfire.gov\/incident-information\/mtbdf-sand-creek\" rel=\"noopener\">Sand Creek fire<\/a> in Montana, they came back with a bonus\u2014observations of an ephemeral <a href=\"https:\/\/cloudappreciationsociety.org\/cloud-library\/pileus\/\" rel=\"noopener\">pileus cloud<\/a> hovering atop one of the towering fire clouds.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Smooth, veil-like pileus clouds\u00a0are well-known to atmospheric scientists and cloud lovers and regarded as signs of especially vigorous <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nesdis.noaa.gov\/our-environment\/severe-weather\/convection\" rel=\"noopener\">convection<\/a>. But researchers rarely observe a pileus cloud interacting with a fire cloud\u2014known as a <a href=\"https:\/\/cloudappreciationsociety.org\/cloud-library\/pyrocumulus\/\" rel=\"noopener\">pyrocumulus<\/a> (pyroCu)\u2014in as much detail as they did on this flight, part of NASA\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/espo.nasa.gov\/inspyre\" rel=\"noopener\">INSPYRE<\/a> (Injected Smoke and Pyrocumulonimbus Experiment) campaign.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Named after the Latin for \u201ccap,\u201d pileus clouds typically form when rising columns of air collide with a sufficiently moist layer of air aloft. Over the Sand Creek fire, a fast-rising updraft heated by the fire displaced air vertically and forced a horizontal layer of moister air sitting above it upward. The process is similar to how air <a href=\"https:\/\/cloudatlas.wmo.int\/en\/orographic-influences-on-the-windward-side.html\" rel=\"noopener\">forced over a mountain<\/a> can produce clouds, explained Neil Lareau, INSPYRE\u2019s deputy project investigator. \u201cBut in this case, the pyrocumulus itself was the \u2018mountain,&#8217;\u201d he said. As the displaced air was pushed upward, it cooled, and its water vapor condensed into a pileus cloud.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The pair of images above was captured at 5:40 p.m. local time (23:40 UTC) by the <a href=\"https:\/\/asapdata.arc.nasa.gov\/sensors\/master\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/asapdata.arc.nasa.gov\/sensors\/master\/\" rel=\"noopener\">MASTER<\/a> (MODIS\/ASTER Airborne Simulator) on one of NASA\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/centers-and-facilities\/armstrong\/er-2-aircraft\/\" rel=\"noopener\">ER-2<\/a>s, a type of high-flying research aircraft. During this flight, the scientists collected MASTER imagery of the plume roughly every 30 minutes, and the pileus was clearly visible in just one scene. The presence of the cloud hints at what Lareau described as the \u201cextreme updraft dynamics\u201d within the fire plume and pyrocumulus. At the time of the image, he explained, the fire was making a rapid run up the western side of Mount Comet as winds aligned with the drainage channels leading up the mountain.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe whole scene is amazing,\u201d he said, noting that the science team was fortunate that MASTER\u2019s visible channels captured the rapidly developing pyrocumulus and pileus cloud, its infrared channels captured the fire\u2019s extreme surface behavior, and downward-pointing radars on the airplane studied the cloud structure. \u201cThis scene is in many ways the core of what we\u2019re after with INSPYRE,\u201d he said. \u201cWe were able to connect and map the surface fire dynamics to the convective plume to the cloud processes.\u201d The image above shows the cloud in four of the <a href=\"https:\/\/asapdata.arc.nasa.gov\/sensors\/master\/reference.html\" rel=\"noopener\">50 channels<\/a>, or bands, measured by MASTER. The false-color panel on the far right of the image is a combination of shortwave-infrared and visible observations, similar to the right image at the top of the page.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fires are just one driver of convection that can produce pileus clouds. Vigorous updrafts associated with severe thunderstorms can also produce these wispy clouds. Researchers who participated in NASA\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/espo.nasa.gov\/crystalface\" rel=\"noopener\">CRYSTAL-FACE<\/a> (Cirrus Regional Study of Tropical Anvils and Cirrus Layers-Florida Area Cirrus Experiment) in Honduras in 2002 <a href=\"https:\/\/acp.copernicus.org\/articles\/6\/1185\/2006\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/acp.copernicus.org\/articles\/6\/1185\/2006\/\" rel=\"noopener\">reported<\/a> the presence of thin cirrus clouds in the tropopause above thunderstorms that were likely the products of pileus clouds.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Volcanic eruptions can produce pileus clouds as well.
