At InnoTrans 2026, Hitachi Rail is putting the spotlight on the new Battery Electric Multiple Unit (BEMU) intercity, the first fully battery-electric train intended for passenger service in Italy.<\/p>\n
Manufactured at its Pistoia and Naples sites, the new train can operate both on electrified lines and on lines without an external power supply representing one of the most advanced expressions of the Group\u2019s engineering and industrial capabilities.<\/p>\n
To date, six BEMU Intercity\u2019s have already been ordered by Trenitalia under the framework agreement signed with Hitachi Rail for the supply of Blues regional trains. The fleet also includes 15 years of full-service maintenance.<\/p>\n
BEMU Intercity is equipped with batteries onboard and can run both with electrical feeding and in autonomous mode. This feature makes it particularly suited for use on partially electrified routes, where it can efficaciously replace diesel trains. The system also allows to recover energy during speed slow down and braking, enhancing the overall performance of the vehicle.<\/p>\n
The presence of batteries allows higher flexibility of shunting, for example in non-electrified depot areas, or in particular situations such as boarding of ferries with passengers onboard. BEMU Intercity is furthermore capable of performing in emergency situations, allowing operative continuity also in case of prolonged electric feeding disruptions from the overhead line.<\/p>\n
Thanks to batteries exceeding 600 kWh, the train can run up to 100 km on non-electrified lines. The presence of two pantographs allows rapid charging of batteries during stopovers: about 30 minutes are sufficient for a complete recharge of the batteries.<\/p>\n
BEMUs can reach a max speed of 160km\/h, with acceleration of 1,10m\/s2, and offer 200 seats. The interiors are designed to guarantee brightness, accessibility and full availability of the spaces thanks to large glass surfaces, windows wider than usual and the roof positioning of the principal traction units.<\/p>\n
The air conditioning system adapts consumption to the effective number of passengers, whereas LED internal and external lighting and the Smart Parking function contribute to further reducing energy consumption. The sustainable footprint of BEMU Intercity is reinforced by the use of materials with high levels of recyclability a renewability and of recycled raw materials.<\/p>\n
