Railway Mission is deeply saddened to announce the death of the Rev David Hardy, Methodist Minister and long-serving Railway Mission chaplain, who died on Monday after living with cancer for some time.<\/p>\n

David was a familiar and much-loved figure around the railway for many years. He was serving as a Methodist minister in the Nuneaton area when he began his ministry with Railway Mission, before later moving to Totnes and then to Stoke Gifford in Bristol.<\/p>\n

Throughout those years, David combined his Christian ministry with a lifelong fascination for the railway. With his trademark clerical collar and 35mm camera, he could often be found visiting stations and railway locations, photographing trains, signals, sidings and the changing railway landscape.<\/p>\n

Yet, for David, the railway was never simply about trains. Above all, it was about people.<\/p>\n

He took time to meet railway staff, to listen to their stories, to remember their names and circumstances, and to quietly offer friendship, encouragement and prayer. His camera may have recorded the railway he loved, but his ministry was always focused upon the men and women who made that railway work.<\/p>\n

Even after retiring from full-time Methodist ministry, David remained deeply committed to the railway and to his work as a Railway Mission chaplain. In later years, he focused much of his support on retired railway associations, while continuing to maintain a caring presence among railway people around Bristol Parkway and along the routes towards Gloucester and Worcester. Retirement may have changed the shape of his ministry, but it never diminished his sense of calling or his affection for the railway community.<\/p>\n

Railway Mission Executive Director Liam Johnston first met David when he joined the Mission in 2000, beginning a friendship and ministry partnership that was to span more than 26 years.<\/p>\n

Even as David’s health declined and he received end-of-life care at home, becoming increasingly less mobile, his concern for railway people remained undiminished. Unable to make the visits he had once enjoyed, he continued to pray faithfully for the railway community he had served and loved for so many years.<\/p>\n

Remarkably, David’s final contribution to Railway Mission’s weekly prayer email was sent on Saturday, just two days before his death. It was entirely characteristic of him that, even towards the very end of his own life, his thoughts and prayers were still directed towards others.<\/p>\n

Liam Johnston, Executive Director of Railway Mission, said: \u201cFinding the words to say goodbye to David is incredibly difficult. I have known him since I first joined Railway Mission in 2000, and over those 26 years he became far more than a fellow chaplain and colleague. He was a valued and faithful friend.<\/p>\n

\u201cDavid had such a gentle and genuine love for railway people. He noticed people. He remembered them. He prayed for them. Even when cancer had taken away so much of his strength and mobility, it never took away his concern for those he had served.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere is something deeply moving about knowing that just two days before his death, David was still thinking about Railway Mission and contributing to our prayers for others. That tells you almost everything you need to know about the man he was.<\/p>\n

\u201cI will miss his friendship, his kindness, his wonderfully familiar presence with his clerical collar and camera, and the quiet faithfulness with which he lived out his calling. The railway has lost a true friend, Railway Mission has lost a faithful servant, and I have lost someone I have been privileged to call my friend for more than a quarter of a century.<\/p>\n

\u201cAt the heart of our thoughts now are David\u2019s wife, Liz, and all the family. They will remain very much in our hearts and prayers at this incredibly sad time. We pray that they will know the love and support of those around them, and take comfort in just how greatly David was loved, valued and respected by so many.\u201d<\/p>\n

David will be greatly missed by his family, friends, fellow chaplains and the many railway people whose lives were touched by his friendship and ministry. Railway Mission gives thanks for a life of quiet, faithful service and for a chaplain whose love for the railway was always, first and foremost, a love for its people.<\/p>\n
