September is not only \u201cback to school\u201d time for children \u2013 as a new cohort of specialist dogs begins training to help in the battle against cable theft on the East Coast Main Line.<\/p>\n
The animals are deployed as part of a growing effort to tackle railway crime, supporting British Transport Police (BTP) officers and Network Rail teams in protecting critical railway infrastructure.<\/p>\n
The dogs are being used as part of a range of measures including targeted security patrols, CCTV, drones and forensic marking of assets to help prevent, detect and investigate offences.<\/p>\n
The latest work builds on a recent \u00a3110,000 investment announced by the East Coast Partnership \u2013 a joint initiative between Network Rail and LNER \u2013 which is funding additional security patrols at key locations along the route.<\/p>\n
Cable theft remains a significant challenge for the railway, causing delays and cancellations for passengers and freight operators while creating serious safety risks. Criminals who target railway cables can damage vital signalling and power systems, bringing trains to a halt and disrupting journeys across large parts of the network.<\/p>\n
Specialist police dogs play an important role in tackling this type of crime. Trained canine teams can search large trackside areas quickly and effectively, helping officers locate offenders, stolen railway materials and key evidence.<\/p>\n
They are also used in realistic training exercises designed to improve the response to cable theft incidents and strengthen coordination between railway partners.<\/p>\n
Some dogs can be trained to detect scents associated with railway equipment and forensic marking products used on railway assets, helping investigators trace stolen materials and support prosecutions.<\/p>\n
The dogs, which started training at a Network Rail depot in Doncaster last week, also provide a highly visible deterrent when deployed alongside officers on patrol.<\/p>\n
John Grainger, joint head of performance for Network Rail and LNER, said: \u201cCable theft is not a victimless crime. It can cause significant disruption for passengers and freight operators, damage infrastructure and create serious safety risks on and around the railway.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe\u2019re committed to working closely with British Transport Police and our industry partners to prevent, detect and prosecute offenders. Specialist police dogs are another valuable tool in that effort, helping officers search large areas quickly, locate evidence and support investigations.<\/p>\n
\u201cAlongside other measures we\u2019re taking, these animals help strengthen our ability to protect the railway and keep passengers moving safely and reliably.\u201d<\/p>\n
