Carbon Management Tool<\/a> (CMT), a rail-specific platform designed to help organisations understand, manage, and reduce whole life carbon emissions from infrastructure and railway assets.<\/p>\nAround half of the railway’s greenhouse gas emissions come from the materials used to build, renew, and maintain infrastructure. But carbon is often considered too late in the development of projects, when opportunities for reduction have already been missed.<\/p>\n
The CMT helps project teams assess the carbon impact of decisions earlier, compare options and identify lower-carbon approaches before they become locked into designs and delivery plans.<\/p>\n
Joshua Fisher, RSSB\u2019s chief operating officer, said: “The railway has an important role to play in the transition to a lower-carbon future, but reducing emissions starts long before a project is delivered.<\/p>\n
“Too often, carbon is treated as something to measure after key decisions have already been made. By that point, many of the biggest opportunities to reduce emissions have been missed.<\/p>\n
“The Carbon Management Tool helps organisations understand the carbon implications of different choices at the point decisions are being made. Developed with the industry, it gives project teams a practical way to compare options, reduce emissions and make better-informed decisions throughout the lifecycle of rail assets.”<\/p>\n
The CMT is available now and free to use. Organisations interested in adopting the tool can access the platform today and learn more through RSSB’s webinar and training programme.<\/p>\n
