{"id":54278,"date":"2024-05-27T16:43:42","date_gmt":"2024-05-27T06:43:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/?p=54278"},"modified":"2024-05-27T16:43:52","modified_gmt":"2024-05-27T06:43:52","slug":"victoria-in-need-of-significant-corrective-action-as-thousands-of-businesses-flee-the-state","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/?p=54278","title":{"rendered":"Victoria in need of \u2018significant corrective action\u2019 as thousands of businesses flee the state"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>More than 3000 businesses have packed up and left Victoria since the end of Covid lockdowns in 2021, new research shows.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Analysis of Australian Bureau of Statistics data, by the Institute of Public Affairs, shows that Victoria experienced the largest net flow of businesses than any other state.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Between January 2022 and March 2024, 3085 Victorian businesses moved interstate, according to the data.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the same time, Queensland welcomed 4276 new businesses, while Western Australia saw an increase of 1048 and South Australia enjoyed 745 more. New South Wales lost 2680 businesses in the same period.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Meanwhile, the figures showed Victoria\u2019s growth rate of new businesses was the lowest in the nation, at 6.30 per cent \u2013 or an increase of 43,143 companies between March 2022 and the end of March this year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>New South Wales, in comparison, had a growth rate of 7.40 per cent, with 61,053 more businesses opening up in the same time frame.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/image-191.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-54282\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/image-191.jpeg 1024w, https:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/image-191-300x225.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/image-191-768x576.jpeg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Experts say businesses fleeing the state is a \u201clong-term effect\u201d of the state\u2019s \u201cfailed\u201d pandemic response. Picture: NCA NewsWire<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Earlier this month, Shadow Treasurer Brad Rowswell&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.heraldsun.com.au\/news\/victoria\/brad-rowswell-says-in-budget-reply-speech-it-wont-always-be-like-this\/news-story\/c1322d14c7b892fdd7258a8d600ad8ce\">issued a desperate plea<\/a>&nbsp;to Victorian businesses, urging them not to leave the state.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cLabor can\u2019t manage money, which is making life harder for every Victorian and pushing businesses to shut up shop and head interstate,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhen a business closes its doors in Victoria, only to open in another state &#8211; jobs, innovation and opportunity are also lost in our state.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A government spokesman said the movement of businesses between the start of 2022 and March 2024 accounts for less than the 0.5 per cent of operational businesses in Victoria.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cVictoria has created 90,000 new businesses since 2021 alone \u2013 more than any other state &#8211; and 170,000 since the Labor Government came to office,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Heraldsun<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>New research has revealed more than 3000 businesses have packed up and left Victoria since the end of Covid lockdowns in 2021.
