After effectively eliminating single wagonload subsidies in late 2025, Hungary is planning to reintroduce the scheme. It will not be as impactful as earlier support, with the package amounting to less than a third of what it was previously.<\/strong>
\n<\/span>The Hungarian government approved the reinstatement of single wagonload (SWL) subsidies at the recommendation of the country\u2019s transport ministry. \u201cWith this decision, we have chosen to continue a programme that has proven capable of keeping the equivalent of hundreds of thousands of truckloads of goods on the railways, even though we inherited it in a disorganised state from the previous government\u201d, wrote Transport Minister D\u00e1vid Vit\u00e9zy on Instagram.<\/p>\n

In late 2025, the previous Orb\u00e1n government decided to discontinue<\/a> SWL subsidies. This forced carriers transporting smaller volumes back onto the road, according to Vit\u00e9zy. Those smaller volumes are not enough to fill entire trains, so a competitive and affordable SWL system is key to keeping these shipments on the railways.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe figures clearly illustrate the program\u2019s significance. Thanks to the subsidy program in effect between 2021 and 2025, more than 20 million metric tonnes of goods remained on the railways, which meant 1.3 million fewer trucks on public roads and a total reduction of 328,000 metric tonnes in carbon dioxide emissions\u201d explained Vit\u00e9zy. \u201cIn 2025 alone, this kept 362,000 truckloads off the roads.\u201d<\/p>\n

Less money for single wagonload after scheme reinstatement<\/h2>\n

The transport minister added that Hungary is not simply restoring the SWL subsidy system. Rather, it is \u201claunching a more targeted and efficient programme\u201d. What this means in practice remains unclear. It is clear, however, that a more targeted approach also translates into a reduction in scope.<\/p>\n

Whereas Hungary used to support SWL with 6.4 billion forints (\u20ac17.4 million) each year, it will only allocate 2 billion forints (\u20ac5.4 million) for 2026. Under the earlier scheme, 11 companies received the subsidies. It is possible that fewer companies will receive support, or that each will receive less money for their SWL operations.<\/p>\n

Much of the SWL subsidies will end up in infrastructure manager M\u00c1V\u2019s coffers. The revenue from track access charges derived from single wagonload traffic previously amounted to approximately 2.5 billion forints (\u20ac6.8 million) annually, according to Vit\u00e9zy.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
