The timing is what makes it hard to defend. Less than two years ago, a string of MPs surrendered their Qantas Chairman’s Lounge memberships after public backlash over free perks from an airline they were meant to be regulating. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
King, whose portfolio includes aviation policy and courting airlines to use Western Sydney Airport, was central to that period of scrutiny: in 2023, her office rejected Qatar Airways’ application for 28 additional weekly flights into major Australian airports, a decision that blocked a direct increase in international aviation competition and directly benefited Qantas, which had lobbied against the extra capacity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
What makes the gift more than an awkward optic is the actual scope of King’s role. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
As Transport Minister, King is the government’s principal regulator of Australian aviation: her portfolio sets airline competition policy, approves or blocks international capacity requests like Qatar’s, oversees consumer protection settings for the sector, and determines slot and access arrangements at Australia’s major airports. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Qantas is not a passive beneficiary of these decisions \u2014 it is the single largest commercial interest directly shaped by them, and the direct beneficiary of the Qatar decision specifically. A minister empowered to block a rival airline from bringing more competitive capacity into the market, and to shape the rules Qantas itself operates under, accepting a personal, ongoing benefit from that same airline sits at the heart of what conflict-of-interest rules exist to prevent, regardless of whether the gift was solicited.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Accepting a lifetime perk from the airline she regulates \u2014 and whose main international competitor she blocked from expanding \u2014 then declaring it only when required to, undercuts the standard she and her colleagues set for themselves in 2023. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
