Norfolk Southern Corporation announced Friday its fourth quarter and full-year 2023 financial results. For the quarter, income from railway operations was $808 million<\/span>\u00a0and diluted earnings per share were\u00a0$2.32<\/span>. These fourth quarter results include a\u00a0$150 million<\/span>\u00a0charge associated with the incident in\u00a0Eastern Ohio<\/span>\u00a0inclusive of\u00a0$76 million<\/span>\u00a0in insurance recoveries.<\/p>\n

Adjusting for the effects of the incident charge, fourth quarter results included income from railway operations of\u00a0$958 million<\/span>\u00a0and diluted earnings per share of\u00a0$2.83<\/span>.<\/p>\n

Fourth Quarter Summary<\/p>\n

Railway operating revenues of\u00a0$3.1 billion<\/span>, down\u00a0$164 million<\/span>, or 5%, compared to fourth quarter 2022.
\nIncome from railway operations was\u00a0$808 million<\/span>\u00a0inclusive of a\u00a0$150 million<\/span>\u00a0charge associated with the Eastern Ohio Incident, a 32% decline compared to\u00a0$1.2 billion<\/span>\u00a0in the fourth quarter of 2022.<\/p>\n

Adjusting for the Eastern Ohio Incident, income from railway operations was\u00a0$958 million<\/span>, down\u00a0$223 million<\/span>, or 19%, compared to fourth quarter 2022.<\/p>\n

Diluted earnings per share were\u00a0$2.32<\/span>, a decline of 32% compared to fourth quarter 2022.<\/p>\n

Adjusting for the Eastern Ohio Incident, diluted earnings per share were\u00a0$2.83<\/span>, down\u00a0$0.59<\/span>, or 17%, compared to fourth quarter 2022.<\/p>\n

2023 Summary<\/p>\n

Railway operating revenues were\u00a0$12.2 billion<\/span>\u00a0in 2023, down 5%, or\u00a0$589 million<\/span>, compared with 2022.
\nRailway operating expenses were\u00a0$9.3 billion<\/span>\u00a0inclusive of a\u00a0$1.1 billion<\/span>\u00a0charge associated with the Eastern Ohio Incident, an increase of 17% compared to 2022.<\/p>\n

Adjusting for the Eastern Ohio Incident, railway operating expenses were\u00a0$8.2 billion<\/span>, up 3% compared to 2022, driven by higher compensation and benefits, inflation, and ongoing network congestion.<\/p>\n

Income from railway operations was\u00a0$2.9 billion<\/span>\u00a0inclusive of the\u00a0$1.1 billion<\/span>\u00a0charge associated with the Eastern Ohio Incident, down 41% year-over-year.<\/p>\n

Adjusting for the Eastern Ohio Incident, income from railway operations was\u00a0$4.0 billion<\/span>, down 18% compared to the prior year.<\/p>\n

Diluted earnings per share were\u00a0$8.02<\/span>\u00a0inclusive of the\u00a0$1.1 billion<\/span>\u00a0charge associated with the Eastern Ohio Incident, down 42% compared with 2022.<\/p>\n
