Geologists estimate that the tilt of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/subjects\/geology\/sedimentary.htm\" rel=\"noopener\">sedimentary rock<\/a> strata found in the area averages <a href=\"https:\/\/trails.lacounty.gov\/Trail\/1853\/apwinga-loop-trail\" rel=\"noopener\">50 degrees<\/a>, steep enough that many of the otherworldly formations appear to point toward the stars. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That\u2019s fitting, in some ways, because the rocks have served as one of the <em>Star Trek<\/em> franchise\u2019s favorite backdrops ever since the show\u2019s inaugural season, when Captain James T. This <a href=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/earth\/earth-observatory\/how-to-interpret-a-false-color-satellite-image\/\" rel=\"noopener\">false-color<\/a> image (<a href=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/mission\/landsat\/spectral-bands-and-applications\/\" rel=\"noopener\">bands 6-5-4<\/a>) was captured by the <a href=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/mission\/landsat\/oli\/\" rel=\"noopener\">OLI<\/a> (Operational Land Imager) aboard <a href=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/mission\/landsat-9\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Landsat 9<\/a> on July 28, 2026.<\/div>\n<div class=\"hds-credits\">NASA Earth Observatory\/Michala Garrison<\/div>\n<\/figcaption><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Vasquez Rocks didn\u2019t start out pointing skyward. When they were forming 25 million years ago, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usgs.gov\/water-science-school\/science\/sediment-and-suspended-sediment\" rel=\"noopener\">sediment<\/a> was spread across <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usgs.gov\/news\/science-snippet\/earthword-alluvial-fan\" rel=\"noopener\">alluvial fans<\/a>\u2014cone-shaped deposits that develop as fast-moving streams empty onto relatively flat plains. The sediment likely hadn\u2019t traveled far, much of it eroding from nearby uplands. Over time, the alluvial fan deposits were buried and cemented into thick layers of sandstone and conglomerate rock.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Over millions of years, the region was then reshaped by the interaction of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.noaa.gov\/jetstream\/tsunamis\/tsunami-generation-earthquakes\/jetstream-max-plate-tectonics-and-earthquakes\" rel=\"noopener\">tectonic plates<\/a> just to the east. Two plates grind past each other along a boundary that includes the <a href=\"https:\/\/geology.com\/articles\/san-andreas-fault.shtml\" rel=\"noopener\">San Andreas Fault<\/a>, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/science\/strike-slip-fault\" rel=\"noopener\">strike-slip fault<\/a> where the North American plate moves southeast and the Pacific plate northwest, contributing to the powerful tectonic forces that ripple throughout the region.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Eventually this tectonic activity led to the uplift and deformation of the Soledad Basin, with sedimentary layers gradually tilting, folding, and rotating. Once they were exposed at the surface, millions more years of weathering and erosion sculpted the formations further, removing softer material and leaving the more resistant sandstone and conglomerate fins and ridges that wow visitors today.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The rock formations represent far-flung moons and planets in <a href=\"https:\/\/screenrant.com\/star-trek-episodes-filmed-vasquez-rocks\/\" rel=\"noopener\">several other <em>Star Trek <\/em>episodes<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/memory-alpha.fandom.com\/wiki\/Ni%27Var\" rel=\"noopener\">Vulcan<\/a>, Spock\u2019s home planet, in two <em>Star Trek<\/em> movies. Other productions have highlighted the Vasquez Rocks as well.
