Montenegro\u2019s state-owned freight operator Montecargo ended 2025 with \u20ac12 million in liabilities and \u20ac10.9 million in accumulated losses. The trend is raising significant uncertainty over the company\u2019s ability to meet its financial obligations, according to auditor Eurorev.<\/strong>
\n<\/span>The financial situation has been exacerbated by the collapse in bauxite transport, which previously accounted for more than 52% of Montecargo\u2019s traffic volume. Only 15 bauxite trains ran between July and December 2025, followed by 27 so far in 2026, representing a 95% decline. Around 50 employees remain assigned to the affected operation and continue to receive salaries despite the lack of regular work.<\/p>\n

Financial situation<\/h3>\n

Total liabilities comprised \u20ac3.5 million in long-term and \u20ac8.5 million in short-term debt. For the latter, this is a \u20ac1.5 million increase compared to a year earlier. Around 50% of Montecargo\u2019s liabilities are owed to other state-owned companies and the government itself.<\/p>\n

More specifically, significant liabilities included \u20ac2.4 million owed to infrastructure manager \u017dICG, \u20ac1.23 million to rolling-stock maintenance company O\u017dVS. An additional \u20ac350,000 is owed to private forwarder Trans Cargo Logistic, while the remaining \u20ac1.2 million is due in taxes and social contributions.<\/p>\n

On a more positive note, Montecargo recorded \u20ac7.1 million in operating revenue in 2025, up \u20ac900,000 (or 14.5%) year-on-year. Operating expenses amounted to \u20ac4.25 million, while gross salary costs reached \u20ac4.41 million. Hence, the company posted a \u20ac960,000 loss, compared to over \u20ac1.5 million in 2024.<\/p>\n
