The international branch of the Swiss SBB Cargo has taken a step to eliminate the need for locomotive changes on cross-border routes. It has taken four new locomotives into use that are interoperable along the Benelux\u2013Italy axis. More additions to the fleet will follow.<\/strong>
\n<\/span>The locomotive in question is Siemens\u2019 Vectron DACHINL XLoad. DACHINL here refers to the countries where SBB Cargo International can use them: Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Italy and the Netherlands.<\/p>\n

SBB Cargo International received the first batch of a total of 20 ordered locomotives on 19 August. The operator added them to its fleet on 31 August.<\/p>\n

The acquisition of these locomotives is a \u201ctargeted investment\u201d in fleet modernisation and interoperability, says SBB Cargo International. They can make cross-border operations more flexible and contribute to the stability and resilience of the company\u2019s production.<\/p>\n

20x Vectron XLoad<\/h2>\n

SBB Cargo International placed its first order for 20 Siemens Vectron XLoad locomotives in cooperation with S\u00fcdLeasing in 2022. At the time, SBB Cargo celebrated<\/a> the interoperability between the Amsterdam, Rotterdam and Antwerp ports and Italy. It also emphasised the benefits associated with the XLoad system, which offers improved tractive power compared to older four-axle locomotives.<\/p>\n

Two years later, in 2024, the operator commissioned S\u00fcdLeasing to order another 20 locomotives. The contract included maintenance for 15 years.<\/p>\n

Using XLoad locomotives means that SBB Cargo can run longer and heavier trains with single traction through the Alps. An otherwise obligatory lead locomotive is not necessary. The XLoad system was characterised as Siemens\u2019 response to Stadler\u2019s Euro9000 locomotives.<\/p>\n
