Serbia allocated \u20ac45.5m for the reconstruction and expansion of the Port of Prahovo, located on the Danube River. Within the project, the port\u2019s railway infrastructure would be modernised as well.<\/strong>
\n<\/span>The project is intended to increase the port’s annual handling capacity to around 3.2m tonnes, compared to the current 1.4m tonnes.<\/p>\n

New siding and new berth<\/h2>\n

The port has rail tracks for a total length of about 971m, sufficient to accommodate around 160 wagons simultaneously. Most of the rail connections between the main network and the port are single-track and non-electrified sections. With the new project, the industrial railway siding will also be upgraded.<\/p>\n

The modernisation of the port also includes an eighth berth with a vertical quay wall, enabling vessels to dock even during periods of low water levels, including ships more than 100m long.<\/p>\n

Green terminal<\/h2>\n

Serbian Transport Minister Aleksandra Sofronijevi\u0107 highlighted the construction of a “green terminal” within the port of Prahovo. This facility will be dedicated to the reception and temporary storage of hazardous and non-hazardous waste from vessels.<\/p>\n

Equipped with pumping and storage facilities for bilge water, waste oils and other liquid residues, as well as separate covered areas for solid waste, it is intended to provide ships navigating the Danube with an environmentally controlled waste-disposal facility.<\/p>\n

Located in eastern Serbia on the Danube, Prahovo is around 270 km east of Belgrade, directly opposite Romania across the river. The port primarily handles bulk and general cargo, including fertilisers, phosphate, metallurgical products and grains. It also handles containers, although container traffic is not a major cargo segment. Prahovo is closely linked to the Elixir fertiliser and chemical industrial complex.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
