{"id":520933,"date":"2026-08-26T21:41:17","date_gmt":"2026-08-26T11:41:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/railuk.com\/?p=198933"},"modified":"2026-08-26T21:41:17","modified_gmt":"2026-08-26T11:41:17","slug":"reminder-bank-holiday-journeys-affected-by-digital-signalling-project","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/?p=520933","title":{"rendered":"Reminder: Bank holiday journeys affected by digital signalling project"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Passengers are reminded that testing ahead of digital signalling being introduced on the East Coast Main Line will affect journeys this weekend.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Engineering work will affect journeys south of Peterborough and Royston towards London between 22.00 on Saturday 29 August and 08.00 on Monday 31 August, with rail replacement bus services in operation for some journeys.*<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The work forms the final stages of testing ahead of the \u00a31.4 billion East Coast Digital Programme\u2019s introduction of digital in-cab signalling \u2013 replacing traditional lineside \u201ctraffic light\u201d signals with real\u2011time information sent directly into the driver\u2019s cab. Over the long term it will deliver more reliable, greener and safer journeys.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Digital signalling has been successfully introduced on the Northern City Line in London and will be introduced on the East Coast Main Line between Welwyn and Hitchin this summer.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-wp-embed is-provider-wistia-inc wp-block-embed-wistia-inc\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" title=\"Welwyn testing B roll (2026) Video\" src=\"https:\/\/fast.wistia.net\/embed\/iframe\/g1ac2i1ddf?dnt=1#?secret=ihOz9lhlHE\" data-secret=\"ihOz9lhlHE\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" width=\"696\" height=\"392\"><\/iframe>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Ricky Barsby, Network Rail head of access integration (ECDP), said:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe work taking place involves the final preparations for us to begin a gradual introduction of digital in-cab signalling on the East Coast Main Line. The ability to control trains in this way will enable a more resilient and reliable railway that is fit for the future.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe have carefully planned this work to avoid the busiest times of the August bank holiday weekend, and where possible passengers may be able to avoid this disruption by travelling before or after Sunday 30 August.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe\u2019re sorry to anyone whose journey is affected and grateful to passengers for their patience and understanding.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>A spokesperson for the train operators said:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe\u2019ve worked closely together and with Network Rail to keep our customers moving and minimise disruption wherever possible.
