{"id":51967,"date":"2024-05-23T21:39:08","date_gmt":"2024-05-23T11:39:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/?p=51967"},"modified":"2024-05-23T21:39:08","modified_gmt":"2024-05-23T11:39:08","slug":"big-boy-4014-runs-on-main-line-solo-with-new-ptc-system","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/?p=51967","title":{"rendered":"\u2018Big Boy\u2019 4014 Runs on Main Line Solo With New PTC System"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span>By Railfan &amp; Railroad Staff<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>On Wednesday, a Union Pacific \u201cBig Boy\u201d ran by itself on the main line for the first time since the steam era thanks to the installation of a new Positive Train Control system.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Earlier this week, the railroad announced UP 4-8-8-4 4014 would make a brief test run out of Cheyenne, Wyo., but an exact reason for the test was not given. But on Wednesday, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=khJZ6NO5rhQ\"><span>photos and videos of the move posted online<\/span><\/a><span> made it clear that UP was testing a new PTC system on the locomotive. Previously, UP used something called \u201cLeaPTC,\u201d which required it to run on the main line with a diesel locomotive. But now 4014 has PTC installed directly on it meaning it no longer will need to operate with a diesel (although it\u2019s unclear if UP will let the locomotive venture too far without a diesel just in case mechanical issues crop up). The system is similar to one<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/railfan.com\/new-positive-train-control-system-tested-aboard-canadian-pacific-2816\/\"><span> installed on Canadian Pacific 4-6-4 2816 last year<\/span><\/a><span>. Like 2816, the PTC equipment has been installed in a cabinet in the tender.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>In 2019, when 4014 first returned to the main line after an extensive restoration, UP had gotten a waiver from the Federal Railroad Administration to let it run on PTC territory without the technology. In 2021, it <a href=\"https:\/\/railfan.com\/up-4014-first-main-line-steam-locomotive-outfitted-with-ptc\/\">became the first main line steam locomotive to receive the technology<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><span>UP 4014 will depart Cheyenne on June 30, as part of a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/railfan.com\/big-boy-tour-schedule-released-4014-to-lead-excursion-over-donner-pass\/\"><span>month-long tour of Wyoming, Utah, Nevada, California and Idaho<\/span><\/a><span>.
