{"id":518679,"date":"2026-08-25T00:53:00","date_gmt":"2026-08-24T14:53:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/railuk.com\/?p=198717"},"modified":"2026-08-25T00:53:00","modified_gmt":"2026-08-24T14:53:00","slug":"work-starts-to-make-swinton-rail-station-fully-accessible-as-part-of-100m-programme-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/?p=518679","title":{"rendered":"Work starts to make Swinton rail station fully accessible as part of \u00a3100m programme"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/railuk.com\/railway-stations\/work-starts-to-make-swinton-rail-station-fully-accessible-as-part-of-100m-programme\/\" title=\"Work starts to make Swinton rail station fully accessible as part of \u00a3100m programme\" rel=\"nofollow\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"485\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.railuk.co\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/24142039\/unnamed-3-1-485x360.jpg\" class=\"webfeedsFeaturedVisual wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" style=\"display: block; margin-bottom: 5px; clear:both;max-width: 100%;\" link_thumbnail=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.railuk.co\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/24142039\/unnamed-3-1-485x360.jpg 485w, https:\/\/cdn.railuk.co\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/24142039\/unnamed-3-1-80x60.jpg 80w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 485px) 100vw, 485px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Work has started to make Swinton rail station fully accessible for all passengers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For years, the steps to the Swinton platforms have been a barrier to many people being able to catch the train &#8211; from those with disabilities to older people and carers pushing buggies.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now, Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) is investing \u00a34.3m to make the station step-free for the first time, working with Network Rail and Northern.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s part of a \u00a3100 million programme to go further and faster to improve accessibility on Greater Manchester\u2019s rail network.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Teams have now started on site at Swinton to deliver:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A new passenger lift providing step-free access to the platforms<\/li>\n<li>A refurbished and more accessible ticket office<\/li>\n<li>A new accessible toilet and baby changing facilities<\/li>\n<li>Improved lighting and CCTV to improve safety and security<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Bev Craig, Mayor of Greater Manchester, said:&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cGreater Manchester\u2019s old Victorian railway stations may be full of character, but the reality is they often act as a barrier to people catching the train.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt\u2019s not right that people need to travel miles to a different station or find another way to get around, just because they can\u2019t get up the station stairs. So, we\u2019re doing something about it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSwinton is one of four stations we\u2019re now on with making step-free. By next spring, everyone will be able to get on the train there, with a new lift to the platforms, toilets and baby-changing facilities, and a lighter, brighter station.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt\u2019s part of my promise to the people of Greater Manchester to make our railways safer and more accessible for everyone as we bring them into the Bee Network.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Swinton station will remain open and trains will run as normal throughout the work, expected to be completed by spring 2027.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To refurbish the ticket office at Swinton and make it fully accessible, the existing ticket office will be closed until November 2026. Passengers are still able to buy tickets using the ticket machines at the station, online or from on-train staff.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ci3.googleusercontent.com\/meips\/ADKq_NaD_iU_xcjLLIdCgRIhh3fAjXwD-HTz2z3AAzumdom7DjFd3C_Vc6C5A9to7xsuCKnr8KMpC_ITgLaefn_o_GuyyLH1W75GML0PTlgEwOyBt54P14p32iP7bcmtMGOCLb-01oiD69A=s0-d-e1-ft#https:\/\/storage.googleapis.com\/cision-attachments-uk\/cwaskf0bed7dmep2usr3qu4w21wm\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"auto\"><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Salford City Mayor, Paul Dennett, said:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><br \/><\/strong>\u201cIn Salford we have campaigned long and hard for step-free access to make the rail network fully accessible for all our community.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;This is fantastic news for Swinton and for Salford residents who rely on our rail network every day. For too long, the lack of step-free access at the station has made travelling by train difficult or impossible for some people. This includes disabled passengers, older residents, parents with young children and those carrying heavy luggage.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt is fantastic news that the investment is confirmed and these vital works are finally starting. It will make such a difference for our local residents.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWell done to all who have made this possible and let us continue to work together to create a transport network that is fully accessible to everyone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">TfGM\u2019s programme is progressing at pace. Last year, Daisy Hill and Irlam stations were made step free. Work is now underway at Bryn and Hindley (both Wigan) and Reddish North (Stockport) stations.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">TfGM will then start work in spring 2027 at Levenshulme (Manchester), Flowery Field (Tameside), and Newton for Hyde (Tameside).
