Norfolk Southern Corporation donated $18.2 million<\/span>\u00a0across its 22-state network in 2023. That is double the contributions made in the prior year, benefitting communities, first responders, and safety initiatives. The year was one of growth for Norfolk Southern\u2019s Corporate Giving initiative, including the launch of new grant programs.<\/p>\n

\u201cOur Corporate Giving program reflects our enduring commitment to building stronger, safer, and more vibrant communities across our network,\u201d said Nabanita Nag, Executive Vice President Corporate Affairs & Chief Legal Officer for Norfolk Southern. \u201cThe increased contributions in 2023 underscore our focus on making a positive and lasting impact where it matters most, affirming our dedication as a catalyst for meaningful change in our communities.\u201d<\/p>\n

Norfolk Southern\u2019s Corporate Giving program focuses on fostering safe and sustainable operations, developing local workforces, and building strong, thriving communities. Key highlights of Norfolk Southern\u2019s 2023 Corporate Giving include:<\/p>\n

Total Donations:\u00a0Norfolk Southern\u2019s philanthropic efforts exceeded\u00a0$18 million<\/span>, reinforcing the company\u2019s dedication to community engagement and support.
\nNew Grant Programs:\u00a0The introduction of\u00a0new grant programs<\/a>\u00a0focused on communities and safety, with nearly\u00a0$5 million<\/span>\u00a0awarded in the first year.<\/p>\n

Thriving Communities Grant Program:\u00a0This new program, contributed approximately\u00a0$2.5 million<\/span>\u00a0to help foster thriving and resilient communities.
\nSafety First Grant Program:\u00a0This new program awarded approximately\u00a0$2.4 million<\/span>\u00a0to organizations and initiatives prioritizing safety and first responders.<\/p>\n

Homelessness Grants:\u00a0Directed<\/a>\u00a0$600,000<\/span>\u00a0in grants toward organizations across its 22-state network to support outreach and support of the homeless.
\nThoroughbred Scholars Program:\u00a0Over\u00a0$500,000<\/span>\u00a0awarded<\/a>\u00a0in scholarship funds to promote educational opportunities.
\nHampton Roads Commitment:\u00a0Continuing a commitment made in 2021,\u00a0$1 million<\/span>\u00a0was\u00a0awarded<\/a>\u00a0to 74\u00a0Hampton Roads, Virginia<\/span>\u00a0nonprofits, furthering the goal of providing\u00a0$5 million<\/span>\u00a0to the community over five years.<\/p>\n

In addition to doubling its contributions in 2023, Norfolk Southern in June launched a new internal giving program, the Thoroughbred Giving Portal, through which employees logged nearly 6,800 hours of community service.
