{"id":513165,"date":"2026-08-19T18:55:49","date_gmt":"2026-08-19T08:55:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/railuk.com\/?p=198288"},"modified":"2026-08-19T18:55:49","modified_gmt":"2026-08-19T08:55:49","slug":"major-upgrades-to-be-delivered-between-newcastle-and-scotland-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/?p=513165","title":{"rendered":"Major upgrades to be delivered between Newcastle and Scotland"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/railuk.com\/rail-news\/major-upgrades-to-be-delivered-between-newcastle-and-scotland\/\" title=\"Major upgrades to be delivered between Newcastle and Scotland\" rel=\"nofollow\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"485\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.railuk.co\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/19095535\/Generic-track-renewals-Network-Rail-485x360.jpg\" class=\"webfeedsFeaturedVisual wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" style=\"display: block; margin-bottom: 5px; clear:both;max-width: 100%;\" link_thumbnail=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.railuk.co\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/19095535\/Generic-track-renewals-Network-Rail-485x360.jpg 485w, https:\/\/cdn.railuk.co\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/19095535\/Generic-track-renewals-Network-Rail-80x60.jpg 80w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 485px) 100vw, 485px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An extensive package of rail improvements will affect journeys between Newcastle and Scotland over three weekends.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Network Rail teams will be at sites across the North East of England carrying out track renewal, upgrades to switches and crossings, improving drainage systems, and renewing overhead line equipment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The work \u2013 an investment of \u00a37.1 million \u2013 will see some train services diverted around line closures, as well as rail replacement services operating for stations between Newcastle and Edinburgh on the weekends of 19 and 20 September, 26 and 27 September, and 3 and 4 October.*<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Passengers travelling on those weekends are advised to plan ahead, allow extra time for journeys and check details of their journeys before setting off.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The improvement work over the three weekends will include:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Laying more than 3.2km of new track at Heaton North, Morpeth, and Shortridge for smoother, more dependable journeys.<\/li>\n<li>Replacing or refurbishing eight sets of points \u2013 the switches and crossings equipment which allows trains to move between tracks \u2013 at Heaton North, Morpeth, Alnmouth, and Tweedmouth to improve reliability.<\/li>\n<li>Renewing 1.5km of overhead line equipment to support more reliable electric train services.<\/li>\n<li>Upgrading track drainage at Scremerston and clearing more than four miles of drainage systems to reduce the risk of flooding and weather-related delays.<\/li>\n<li>Carrying out vegetation management to keep signals visible and prevent trees and leaves touching the overhead power lines, which can cause disruption.<\/li>\n<li>Mandatory safety inspections of the track, points, and structures along the route to maintain a safe and reliable railway.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gunnar Lindahl, joint operations director for Network Rail and LNER, said: \u201cThis is a major programme of work that will help deliver a more reliable railway between Newcastle and Scotland for passengers and freight customers. These three weekends of work will see us deliver a significant package of improvements \u2013 renewing track, points, drainage and overhead line equipment across the route.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cBy investing in this vital infrastructure now, we can improve reliability, reduce the risk of delays caused by flooding and failures, and help provide smoother, more reliable journeys for passengers and freight services.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe know that engineering work causes disruption to passengers and we\u2019re sorry to anyone whose journey will be affected. We want to thank passengers and residents for their patience while this essential work takes place.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A spokesperson for the train operating companies commented: \u201cThese improvements will help deliver a more reliable railway for our customers, and we\u2019re working hard as an industry to keep people moving over these weekends.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSome trains can divert around the work, allowing customers to maintain direct rail connections. However, some stations will be served by rail replacement services.
