Data centre developers who refuse to fund their own water and energy supply will be locked out of NSW\u2019s new fast-track approval pathway, cutting assessment times from two years to 75 days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Revealed on Monday, the NSW Data Centre Policy Framework will provide a streamlined assessment pathway for data centre projects that meet six principles, including \u201cworld-class environmental and efficiency standards\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It will also be required that the data centres do not impose a \u201cnet cost\u201d to consumers or communities, fund additional water and energy supply, \u201cenhance local community infrastructure and amenity\u201d, invest in the supply chain, and commit to training and jobs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
NSW Treasurer Daniel Mookhey said data centres would use \u201cmore and more recycled water\u201d and would help the government \u201cpipe more renewable energy\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cData centres need to pay their own way,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThey need to bring additional power and additional water to offset the demand but also to pick up some of the slack that\u2019s otherwise would fall to households.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
