DB Cargo UK, the British arm of Germany’s state-owned freight operator, has announced details of a multinational corporate restructuring. The most significant move is confirmation that the business will ultimately be offered for sale.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

The company, which operates extensively across the British freight market, is active in flows ranging from aggregates to intermodal traffic. It also has a substantial locomotive fleet and an extensive network of operational and maintenance facilities. DB Cargo UK also has a significant research and development programme focused on alternative fuels.<\/p>\n

Official statement<\/h2>\n

The company made a statement today, signed off by the CEO, Andrea Rossi. “As we look to the future and pursue our growth ambitions, the UK Management Board has today announced that we are looking for a new owner who can provide access to additional capital, broader market opportunities and the scale required to support the next phase of our development,” it said.<\/p>\n

DB Cargo, the German state-owned company and the current shareholder of the company, said it will increase its focus on operations in Central Europe, “which are undergoing restructuring following the European Commission’s State Aid ruling.” As a consequence of the announcement, the UK Management Board said it had appointed “legal and financial advisers to support a structured process” to find a new owner.<\/p>\n

“We are confident that a sale represents the best route to securing the long-term growth, competitiveness and sustainability of the business (…) In the meantime, the business will continue to operate as normal\u201d, the company said. The decision to sell also stems from the fact that the improvements in finances and operations were “offset by a range of external factors, largely beyond our control, which have increased our already challenging cost base”.<\/p>\n

Movement in the sector<\/h2>\n

The potential sale comes as global shipping groups push further into UK rail and inland logistics. MSC\u2019s logistics arm MEDLOG<\/a> bought UK logistics company Maritime Transport in 2024, while French shipping giant CMA CGM subsequently acquired Freightliner\u2019s UK intermodal business.<\/a> A sale of DB Cargo UK would put another major rail freight operator into play after two of the country\u2019s biggest intermodal businesses changed hands in less than two years, giving international groups another route to greater control of UK freight supply chains.<\/p>\n

DB Cargo UK has declined to make any further comment at this time. The company only mentioned that it will keep communicating, especially with trade unions. In the meantime, ASLEF already defined the sale as a “golden opportunity to end race to the bottom”.<\/p>\n
