The North East Scotland city of Aberdeen remains synonymous with North Sea oil and gas logistics. As the fossil fuel energy sector matures and declines, the Port of Aberdeen is undergoing one of the most significant transformations in its 890-year history.<\/strong>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

The opening of South Harbour, expansion into offshore wind and growing cargo diversification mark a decisive shift in the port\u2019s role within UK and North Sea supply chains. At the centre of this transition is a deliberate strategy to move from hydrocarbon dependence to a broader energy and logistics platform spanning renewables, project cargo and emerging trade flows.<\/p>\n

A port built on energy<\/h2>\n

Few UK ports are as closely identified with a single industry as \u00adAberdeen has been with offshore oil and gas. Over the past half-century, it has functioned as the principal logistics base for North Sea exploration, production support and offshore supply operations.<\/p>\n

That legacy, according to Chief Executive Bob Sanguinetti, is both an asset and a constraint. \u201cIt was a very bold and ambitious decision taken by our predecessors,\u201d he said, referring to the South Harbour investment. \u00ad\u201cInitially, it was in the oil and gas space, but it soon became apparent that, as oil and gas will naturally come to an end at some point, we needed to think about long-term strategy and how to keep the port relevant.\u201d<\/p>\n

Aberdeen\u2019s offshore ecosystem has developed around supply vessels, subsea engineering, drilling logistics and personnel transfer operations. This has created a dense industrial base of marine contractors and energy service companies embedded across both North and South Harbours.<\/p>\n

Sanguinetti is clear that hydrocarbons will remain part of the mix for many years yet. \u201cOil and gas \u00adremains our most significant sector, and we are going to need it for decades to come. We are fully focused on \u00adsupporting customers, consolidating our position, and building on our good \u00adprogress with attracting jack-up rigs and other associated vessels.\u201d<\/p>\n

Transformational South \u00adHarbour<\/h2>\n

The centrepiece of Aberdeen\u2019s modernisation is the GB\u00a3420 million South Harbour development, completed in 2023. The scheme added around 1.5 km of deepwater quay and significantly expanded laydown and heavy-lift capacity across the port.<\/p>\n

In total, Aberdeen now offers nearly eight kilometres of quay across its combined harbour estate, making it by some reputes among the largest ports in the UK by berth length.<\/p>\n

Sanguinetti described the project as transformational in both scale and capability. \u201cIt has increased our quayside length by about 20%, but crucially it has given us much deeper water,\u201d he said. \u201cAll of South Harbour is at least 50% deeper than the deepest bit of North Harbour. So it has taken us into a new domain completely.\u201d<\/p>\n

With South Harbour, the expanding port now provides water depths of up to 10.5 metres LAT, heavy-lift capacity of around 140 tonnes per square metre, and extensive laydown space approaching 692,000 square metres. It is designed to accommodate vessels up to 300 metres in length and support offshore energy, project cargo and bulk operations.<\/p>\n

The facility is already reshaping operational patterns. Offshore wind components, subsea structures and integrated project cargoes are increasingly consolidated and assembled at South Harbour before offshore deployment.<\/p>\n

Aberdeen is trying to carve a niche in the renewable energy offshore industry. \u201cWe’re not in the market for the very large-scale heavy manufacturing of the foundations or the jackets or the towers and so on,\u201d explains Sanguinetti. \u201cWe see other sites up and down the country, rather than ports, doing that. But where we feel we are very well placed to contribute is in integrating those various component parts, pulling them all together and then towing them out to wherever they’re going to be deployed.\u201d Aberdeen, he stresses, has the laydown space with its new harbour, and also has the supply chain in the hinterland. The industrial base around Aberdeen is finely tuned to support offshore projects, and the city is geographically closest to the majority of proposed wind farm developments in the North Sea.<\/p>\n

\u201cOnce you put all these big component parts together, you want to have the shortest distance to then tow that structure in its entirety out to where it’s going to sit for the next 10, 20, 30 years,\u201d he says. \u201cSo we have a key role to play there, and that is absolutely where South Harbour sits. Looking downstream, the routine operations and maintenance we can do from smaller boats that can go from North Harbour. Where we see a key role for Aberdeen and for South Harbour is as a major components replacement hub.\u201d<\/p>\n

Long term planning<\/h2>\n

This continuation is already a part of the business plan for the port. \u201cTake, for example, Kincardine wind farm,\u201d says Sanguinetti. \u201cAt the moment, you’ll see that there’s one wind turbine missing because it needed to be taken away for maintenance, for repair work and so on. It couldn’t be brought into South Harbour because, at the moment, South Harbour is not deep enough. So it had to be towed all the way across the North Sea to Rotterdam at huge expense, and of course, it takes time. So where we think we have a long-term role to play is becoming that major components repair hub because, with a modest amount of dredging, we’ve got a project already identified for and having the right infrastructure, a ring crane that can service large bits of kit and so on.\u201d<\/p>\n

Rather than sailing away from Aberdeen, Bob Sanguinetti has a long-term plan that will see the potential of South Harbour realised again in 10-15 years. \u201cBecause of the proximity to those wind farms, bringing it back to Aberdeen, doing the work here and then taking it back out again is where we will add considerable strength.\u201d<\/p>\n

Deep thoughts<\/h2>\n

In the meantime, South Harbour is not quite deep enough to fulfil that promise. That suggests management is considering further dredging. \u201cWe are indeed, because at the moment I would say that we are about 90% floating offshore wind project ready,\u201d says Sanguinetti, who admits to a degree of speculation when the transformational project was undertaken. \u201cClearly, when we designed and built South Harbour, the specific requirements from the offshore wind developers were not well known,\u201d he says. \u201cThat’s been emerging work. We now know that actually to put ourselves right in the sweet spot, dredging some of it, not all of it, but dredging some of South Harbour by an extra two to three metres will put us absolutely where we need to be.\u201d<\/p>\n

Offshore energy transition<\/h2>\n

Offshore wind underpins Aberdeen\u2019s long-term repositioning as a broader energy hub. The North Sea is expected to host substantial floating and fixed-bottom wind deployment over the coming decades, and Aberdeen is seeking to establish itself as a staging, assembly and maintenance hub.<\/p>\n

Sanguinetti set out the ambition in clear terms: \u201cWe want to be doing exactly the same for offshore wind for the next 60 years plus as we have done for oil and gas.\u201d<\/p>\n

Geography is central to that proposition. Aberdeen sits close to major planned wind farm zones off Scotland\u2019s east coast, reducing tow-out distances for assembled structures.<\/p>\n

Managing a complex harbour<\/h2>\n

Operational complexity is increasing as cargo diversity expands. The Marine Operations Centre coordinates vessel traffic across both North and South Harbours, managing one of the busiest port systems in Scotland.<\/p>\n

Aberdeen accounts for approximately 40% of all ship movements through Scottish ports, requiring continuous coordination between offshore supply vessels, ferries, cargo ships and specialist energy assets.<\/p>\n

Sanguinetti highlighted the role of digitalisation in managing this complexity. \u201cWe have rolled out a 5G programme, so we now have the backbone infrastructure to facilitate data handling and management,\u201d he said. \u201cWe are in a much better place to monitor environmental conditions across both harbours.\u201d<\/p>\n

Work is also underway on digital twin technology to model South \u00adHarbour operations, particularly in relation to offshore wind logistics and berth optimisation. The objective is to improve vessel flow while maintaining operational continuity across multiple cargo streams.<\/p>\n

Cargo diversification<\/h2>\n

While offshore energy remains dominant, Aberdeen is actively broadening its cargo base. Commercial \u00addirector Roddy James said the port is already seeing early diversification into new sectors. \u201cWe are going to see growth in Ro-Ro capabilities, bulk exports, heavy lift out-of-gauge items and hopefully container shipments,\u201d he said. \u201cContainerised cargo would be a first for the north of Scotland.\u201d<\/p>\n

He added that offshore wind, decommissioning and bulk commodities will all play a greater role in future traffic. \u201cWe know decommissioning will start to pick up, and renewable sectors are coming online. That is where we see opportunity for growth.\u201d<\/p>\n

Timber exports are also emerging as a notable flow, with recent shipments to Scandinavia. There is a \u00adcircular logistics dimension to this trade, with raw material potentially returning to the UK as finished goods for retail distribution.<\/p>\n

At the same time, legacy infrastructure is being repurposed. The former Aberdeen fishmarket at Palmerston Quay has been redeveloped by Streamline Shipping Group into a freight and distribution terminal serving Scotland and the Northern Isles.<\/p>\n

Rail freight and multimodal<\/h2>\n

Rail remains a secondary but strategically discussed element of Aberdeen\u2019s logistics ecosystem. Waterloo Terminal, Craiginches Yard and Raith\u2019s Farm near Dyce form the core of the existing rail infrastructure, although each presents operational constraints.<\/p>\n

Waterloo is considered unsuitable for modern intermodal use due to layout and handling limitations. Craiginches offers more potential, including legislative provision for future connectivity to South Harbour, although physical distance and topography remain challenges.<\/p>\n

Raith\u2019s Farm, completed in 2009, remains largely underutilised despite being a modern intermodal facility. It was intended to replace the former Guild Street yard but has seen limited regular use, reflecting the dominance of road-based logistics in the region.<\/p>\n

Both Sanguinetti and key account manager Chris Whetham acknowledged long-term potential for rail freight growth, particularly linked to offshore wind, decommissioning and bulk cargo flows. However, viability will depend on achieving sufficient cargo density and commercial alignment with operators.<\/p>\n

\n

A port for the future<\/h2>\n

Aberdeen\u2019s long-term strategy is framed explicitly as evolution rather than replacement. Chief Executive Bob Sanguinetti described the transition as a generational shift. \u201cWe want to be the key logistics hub for offshore energy, but there will be a more equal balance between fossil fuels and offshore wind, and we will be a much more diverse port making full use of South Harbour,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Decarbonisation is central to this evolution. The port is targeting net zero operations by 2040, supported by the UK\u2019s largest operational shore power system, electrified equipment, renewable electricity procurement and LED infrastructure upgrades. South Harbour has been designed with future energy systems in mind, including service trenches capable of accommodating future low and zero-carbon fuels or electrical distribution infrastructure.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have done the groundwork so that we can \u00adenable future energy systems at reduced cost when the time is right,\u201d Sanguinetti said.<\/p>\n

While the transition is complex and capital-\u00adintensive, the strategic direction is clear. Aberdeen intends to remain a critical logistics node for North Sea energy, regardless of sector \u00adcomposition. As Sanguinetti put it, the port\u2019s \u00addefining characteristic is continuity through change. \u201cWe are still the busiest port in Scotland, and we have been adapting for nearly 900 years. That is not going to change.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
