Essential work to improve accessibility at Pokesdown station is set to begin, with two new lifts to be installed to provide step-free access to both platforms.<\/p>\n

The project, being delivered in partnership by South Western Railway, Network Rail Wessex, and the Department for Transport, will convert the station\u2019s existing disused goods lift shafts into fully accessible customer lifts, making Pokesdown station step-free once complete.<\/p>\n

Funding for this project has been provided by South Western Railway, Network Rail, and UK Government.<\/p>\n

The key works for this project, including the construction of new lifts and motor rooms, are due to begin in October 2026 with the project expected to be completed by early 2028.<\/p>\n

The improvements at Pokesdown will be another step forward for making the railway accessible for all customers wanting to use it.<\/p>\n

In addition to making the station more accessible, a number of station improvements have already been completed, including cleaning the station entrance and fa\u00e7ade stonework, removing graffiti, deep cleaning the booking hall and installing a new interactive totem.<\/p>\n

Further improvements are also planned at the station, as part of AFC Bournemouth\u2019s ground expansion plans. Subject to final approvals, these enhancements include the installation of two additional entrance doors and the widening of access between the booking hall and station footbridge, supported by external funding contributions.<\/p>\n

During construction, customers and neighbours will see increased activity around the station, including delivery vehicles, specialist plant and construction workers. Hoardings will also be in place to keep customers safely separated from the construction site.<\/p>\n

Pokesdown station will remain open while the new lifts are constructed. In order to keep the station operational, some work will need to take place overnight, at weekends or during planned railway closures.<\/p>\n

Lawrence Bowman, managing director of South Western Railway & Network Rail Wessex said: \u201cThis is a hugely significant moment for Pokesdown and for everyone who has worked so hard to make step-free access a reality. I\u2019d particularly like to recognise local stakeholders, whose determination and persistence have helped keep this project moving forward and firmly on the agenda.<\/p>\n

Customers, including people with reduced mobility, parents with buggies and those travelling with luggage, have faced barriers when using this station. These new lifts will open up the railway to more people and create a station that is welcoming, accessible and fit for the future.<\/p>\n

We\u2019re proud to be working alongside the Department for Transport and local partners to deliver an improvement that will make a lasting difference to the community.\u201d<\/p>\n

Tom Hayes MP, member of parliament for Bournemouth East, added: \u201cPokesdown will finally be step-free in early 2028, with work getting underway this year. For so many, this matters so much.<\/p>\n

I grew up caring for disabled parents, cut off from society, and want everyone to have equal rights to our railways.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s been an honour to share local people\u2019s stories with the Treasury and these stories helped to secure the nearly \u00a33m necessary to start work on making Pokesdown step free.<\/p>\n
