When this celestial event last occurred, on April 8, 2024, the path of totality <a href=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/eclipses\/future-eclipses\/eclipse-2024\/where-when\/\" rel=\"noopener\">stretched across North America<\/a>, giving millions the chance to glimpse the <a href=\"https:\/\/spaceplace.nasa.gov\/sun-corona\/en\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Sun\u2019s corona<\/a>. In 2026, the viewing locales are more limited; only a handful of land areas in the Northern Hemisphere, including parts of Iceland and Spain, fall within the path of totality.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On <a href=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/eclipses\/future-eclipses\/total-solar-eclipse-on-august-12-2026\/\" rel=\"noopener\">August 12<\/a>, the Moon\u2019s shadow will first cross over the Arctic Circle from northern Russia and then track along the eastern side of Greenland. At about 5:45 p.m. local time in Iceland (17:45 Universal Time), the country\u2019s western fringes\u2014including the <a href=\"https:\/\/snaefellsnes.is\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Sn\u00e6fellsnes peninsula<\/a>, shown in the Landsat image above\u2014will begin to experience totality. It is the highlight of a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visiticeland.com\/article\/snaefellsjokull-national-park\" rel=\"noopener\">national park<\/a> of the same name, where people are expected to visit to <a href=\"https:\/\/snaefellsjokull.is\/en\/eclipse-2026-information-for-guests\" rel=\"noopener\">view the eclipse<\/a>. The stratovolcano even has a literary claim to fame: in Jules Verne\u2019s <em>A Journey to the Center of the Earth<\/em>, characters venture underground through its crater, later emerging in an eruption of <a href=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/earth\/earth-observatory\/eruption-of-stromboli-volcano-italy\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Stromboli<\/a>, in Italy. In 2025, a broader area of the peninsula was designated a UNESCO <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unesco.org\/en\/mab\/snaefellsnes\" rel=\"noopener\">biosphere reserve<\/a>, containing over 70 percent of Iceland\u2019s flora and an agglomeration of volcanic landscapes, wetlands, and grasslands.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">From Iceland, the eclipse shadow, or umbra, progresses across the North Atlantic and reaches northern Spain shortly before sunset. It then meanders through <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wine-searcher.com\/regions-rioja+alta?srsltid=AfmBOoojoboctBjF_6rolIhcYfxFyFnkMcDc20LKY3InhMSA4Gw6xtc-#tab-learn\" rel=\"noopener\">La Rioja<\/a>, a region known for its vineyards. About 400 kilometers (250 miles) away, the river reaches a delta on the Mediterranean coast between Barcelona and Valencia.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Based on satellite measurements of <a href=\"https:\/\/eclipsophile.com\/tse2026\/\" rel=\"noopener\">cloud cover<\/a> in August over several decades, viewers in Spain have a higher likelihood than those in Iceland of getting a clear look at the eclipse.
