This naturally recurring phenomenon is characterized by warmer-than-normal water temperatures in parts of the equatorial Pacific along with changes to atmospheric and oceanic circulation patterns. Its regional effects range from desert floods to delayed monsoons to shifts in where tropical cyclones are more likely to form.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">NOAA\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cpc.ncep.noaa.gov\/products\/analysis_monitoring\/enso_advisory\/ensodisc.shtml\" rel=\"noopener\">Climate Prediction Center<\/a> expects the current El Ni\u00f1o to continue to strengthen through the end of 2026, with a 97 percent chance of lasting through early Northern Hemisphere spring 2027. Even during El Ni\u00f1o\u2019s early stages, satellites have observed characteristic changes along the equatorial Pacific, such as warmer-than-normal <a href=\"https:\/\/www.noaa.gov\/news-release\/el-nino-forms-expected-to-strengthen-say-noaa-forecasters#:~:text=sea%20surface%20temperature\" rel=\"noopener\">sea surface temperatures<\/a> and higher-than-normal <a href=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/earth\/earth-observatory\/el-nino-is-underway\/\" rel=\"noopener\">sea surface height<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Among the first ecological downstream effects are changes to the marine food web. The maps above show <a href=\"https:\/\/ecowatch.noaa.gov\/thematic\/chlorophyll-a\" rel=\"noopener\">chlorophyll-a<\/a> concentrations\u2014the pigment present in most <a href=\"https:\/\/earthobservatory.nasa.gov\/features\/Phytoplankton\" rel=\"noopener\">phytoplankton<\/a>\u2014as observed by the <a href=\"https:\/\/pace.oceansciences.org\/oci.htm\" rel=\"noopener\">OCI<\/a>\u00a0(Ocean Color Instrument) on NASA\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/mission\/pace\/\" rel=\"noopener\">PACE<\/a>\u00a0(Plankton, Aerosol, Cloud, ocean Ecosystem) satellite. In June 2025 (left), conditions were neutral, while in June 2026 (right), El Ni\u00f1o\u00a0was strengthening.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The most noticeable difference appears in the central Pacific, around the equator due north of New Zealand: chlorophyll concentrations, an indication of phytoplankton abundance, are substantially lower in 2026. This change is expected, said Matthew Kehrli and Graham Trolley, oceanographers in the Ocean Ecology Laboratory at NASA\u2019s Goddard Space Flight Center. That\u2019s because during an El Ni\u00f1o, easterly equatorial trade winds weaken, the warm surface layer of the ocean extends deeper, and the upwelling of cool, nutrient-rich water that typically fuels phytoplankton growth is suppressed. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As the El Ni\u00f1o progresses, the scientists anticipate the differences in the central Pacific will become more pronounced. \u201cThis may manifest as a greater difference in values across the current region, as a broadening region of reduced surface chlorophyll-a concentration, or both, depending on the behavior of the equatorial trade winds,\u201d they said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Reductions in phytoplankton have ripple effects through the marine food web, including in coastal regions. Less food is available for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/national-aquatic-resource-surveys\/indicators-zooplankton\" rel=\"noopener\">zooplankton<\/a>, as well as for fish, seabirds, and marine mammals. Peru\u2019s anchovy fisheries have seen profound <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/a-super-el-nino-has-the-power-to-devastate-fishing-and-leave-seals-and-sea-lions-starving-285108#:~:text=Dramatic%20effects%20on%20fisheries\" rel=\"noopener\">declines in catch<\/a> during past El Ni\u00f1os, driven similarly by warmer surface waters, reduced upwelling, and lower phytoplankton abundance. In 2026, Peru\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gob.pe\/institucion\/produce\/noticias\/1405316-produce-refuerza-medidas-de-conservacion-y-suspende-la-pesca-de-anchoveta-en-la-zona-norte-centro\" rel=\"noopener\">Ministry of Production<\/a> repeatedly suspended the fishery to safeguard the country\u2019s main fishing resource. Pelicans have been seen <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/environment\/peru-hungry-pelicans-signal-broader-economic-risks-el-nio-2026-07-22\/\" rel=\"noopener\">venturing<\/a> into Peruvian ports and urban areas in search of food.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Although the disruptions to marine life can be severe, a post-El Ni\u00f1o \u201cchlorophyll rebound,\u201d with higher-than-normal concentrations in the equatorial Pacific, can occur. <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1029\/2021GL096113\" rel=\"noopener\">Research suggests<\/a> that higher iron concentrations delivered in ocean currents, as well as dust arriving from drier land in parts of Central and South America, help fuel the resurgence\u2014a rebound that doesn\u2019t require a follow-on La Ni\u00f1a. La Ni\u00f1a, which <a href=\"https:\/\/www.climate.gov\/news-features\/understanding-climate\/el-nino-and-la-nina-frequently-asked-questions#:~:text=El%20Ni%C3%B1o%20is%20often%20(but%20not%20always)%20followed%20by%20La%20Ni%C3%B1a\" rel=\"noopener\">often follows<\/a> El Ni\u00f1o events, can also produce elevated chlorophyll concentrations. A strong La Ni\u00f1a in 1998\u20131999 set off a <a href=\"https:\/\/pace.oceansciences.org\/docs\/OceanColor_508_lenticular.pdf\" rel=\"noopener\">large phytoplankton bloom<\/a> in the eastern Pacific and a dramatic increase in fish populations.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Scientists have new tools available for studying this sort of variability. The PACE mission launched in February 2024, making this the first complete El Ni\u00f1o event for which the satellite will gather global, near-daily hyperspectral measurements. \u201cThe scientific community will be able to observe the 2026 El Ni\u00f1o with data across more wavelengths of light than ever before,\u201d Kehrli and Trolley said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To better understand effects on life in the ocean, researchers hope to use PACE data to gauge the responses of specific phytoplankton communities to El Ni\u00f1o. And the possibilities extend beyond the marine realm, the scientists note.
