Two ports in southern Spain are taking steps to expand their role in rail freight. The Port of Huelva has completed an expansion of its rail infrastructure in the southern dock, while the Port of Seville has launched a tender to extend rail access to its liquid logistics terminal.<\/strong>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

At the Port of Huelva, the works included the installation of a third track to enable rail motorway services carrying semi-trailers on 750-metre trains. The port began testing the service to C\u00f3rdoba a few weeks ago in cooperation with VTG and Ewals Cargo Care.<\/p>\n

The port authority invested \u20ac6.3m in the project, funded by the EU\u2019s Recovery and Resilience Facility. A total of 1.2km of new slab track was laid, while the adjacent terminal was expanded from around 33,000 to 48,000sqm. \u201cThe works have been carried out by the company Asch Infraestructuras y Servicios SA,\u201d the Port of Huelva said.<\/p>\n

750-metre trains in Seville<\/h2>\n

At the Port of Seville, the aim is also to accommodate 750-metre trains at the Sevitrade Liquid Logistics Terminal. This will be achieved by adding a new siding. \u201cThis siding will have a total length of one kilometre and will run along the left bank of the existing rail ring of the Port of Seville,\u201d the port said.<\/p>\n

Companies can submit their proposals until 29 September. The project is valued at \u20ac2.3m and is co-funded by the European Regional Development Fund. The works are expected to take 10 months, with the new line due to enter service by mid-2027.<\/p>\n

Seville is also building a new rail yard in Palmas Altas, a few kilometres south of the main port area. The facility will include three 750-metre tracks.<\/p>\n
