The Spanish National Commission for Markets and Competition (CNMC) has published the national rail freight statistics for 2025. The most noteworthy development is a return to growth, for the first time since pandemic year 2021. Some companies fared better than others.<\/strong>
\n<\/span>Rail operators in Spain moved 21.59 million net tonnes of freight in 2025. This marks a 2.6% growth compared to 2024, the first year-on-year growth since 2021. In terms of transport performance, measured in net tonne-kilometres, Spain recorded an increase of 6.7%. This translates into a total of 9.82 billion net tonne-kilometres.<\/p>\n

Those are positive numbers, especially when compared to the trend of the last few years. The Spanish rail freight industry peaked in 2015, after which it embarked on a path of decline with an exception in 2017. The only growth year since then was 2021. Spanish rail freight underperformed during all other years compared to the years before.<\/p>\n

Growth is unlikely to continue in 2026. The start of the year turned out to be unfavourable<\/a>, with numerous accidents on the railway. Passengers, and freight to a lesser extent, shied away from the railways. The Q1 volume dropped by 8.2% compared to the same period in 2025.<\/p>\n
