Massive wildfires currently raging in south-west France are disrupting rail traffic with all trains, passenger and freight, going south from Bordeaux and vice versa suspended until further notice. One rail company badly-hit is DB Cargo France, whose president and CEO, Alexandre Gallo, told RailFreight.com that it had to cancel five trains per day as a result of the wildfires which began last week.<\/strong>
\n<\/span>\u201cTrain services to and from the south have been suspended at Bordeaux. It is therefore impossible to deliver the scheduled trains to Bayonne and all onward freight to Spain via the Atlantic coast. For the time being, we have been told that the line will remain closed until at least Wednesday, but we do not know whether this is a precautionary measure or whether the line itself has been affected (by the wildfires).\u201d<\/p>\n

He said his thoughts were with DB Cargo France staff who may have been evacuated from towns and areas affected by the wildfires. Brittany Ferries’ combi rail-road service between Cherbourg and Bayonne-Mouguerre, in the French country is another reported casualty of the disruption, among others.<\/p>\n

Truck traffic impacted too<\/h2>\n

And it\u2019s not just rail freight that\u2019s impacted. The A63 motorway \u2013 a major corridor for truck traffic between Spain and France – has been closed in a south-north direction since yesterday evening so as not to create congestion in the Bordeaux suburbs where the wildfires are now concentrated. This has had in turn led to a severe build-up of trucks in Bayonne in the Basque country.<\/p>\n

The wildfires, which started last Wednesday, have already burnt 42,000 hectares of land and forced the evacuation of 220,000 people. Although reported to have stabilised, they are nevertheless still spreading and approaching Bordeaux.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
