The Bulgarian Ministry of Transport is allocating 10.6 million euros \u201cfor the modernisation and expansion of existing terminals in the underdeveloped regions of the country.\u201d Beneficiaries will be able to get between 766,937 and 2.04 million euros to be used for new intermodal equipment, IT systems and build new rail and road infrastructure.<\/strong>
\n<\/span>This is the second time the Bulgarian government approves such funds, the ministry specified. In March 2025, it made available 17.7 million euros that could be used to fund 50% of the total costs of upgrading existing terminals. This first call for application excluded the southwestern region of Bulgaria, while the latest one includes the whole country.<\/p>\n

For both calls, the funds come from the European Regional Development Fund through the Transport Connectivity Programme 2021-2027. In this case, however, the Bulgarian ministry did not specify any deadline for submitting proposals.<\/p>\n

Intermodal investments<\/h2>\n

In addition to these financial schemes, Bulgaria is investing in its rail freight facilities with international importance. A brand new terminal is being built in Ruse<\/a>, on the border with Romania. This is a 60-million-euro project, with 50 million euros coming from EU funds. In addition, four intermodal facilities<\/a> are being upgraded in the country\u2019s main ports: two in Varna and two in Burgas.
