The German terminal and logistics operator HHLA has adjusted its financial expectations for the 2026 financial year. HHLA says that it can no longer compensate for losses incurred by the winter weather in January. Infrastructure works have exerted the biggest negative impact.<\/strong>
\n<\/span>HHLA has adjusted its performance expectations for several of its branches. Notably, the company now expects a slight decrease in container throughput compared to 2025. HLLA had projected to achieve a significant increase in this area earlier.<\/p>\n

Similarly, the German operator has lowered its expectations for container transportation. It still expects a slight increase, but previously foresaw a strong increase. HHLA has two transportation companies: rail operator METRANS and the trucking company Container-Transport-Dienst.<\/p>\n

At the Group level, HHLA now expects a significant increase in revenue. This is a downgrade from the previously expected strong increase. The company is expecting to achieve an EBIT between 150 and 170 million euros, down from the earlier estimate of 175-195 million euros.<\/p>\n

Infrastructure works, economy, and weather conditions<\/h2>\n

The expectation adjustments did not come entirely out of the blue. HHLA is highly active in the German transportation market, where infrastructure works have hindered the sector intensively.<\/p>\n

HHLA\u2019s German port terminals are currently undergoing automation modernisation works. Together with DB InfraGO\u2019s rail upgrades<\/a> (notably the Hamburg\u2013Berlin railway modernisation), these have exerted a greater-than-expected impact on HHLA\u2019s operations. \u201cAs a result, the throughput and transport volumes have fallen short of the original assumptions.\u201d<\/p>\n

HHLA adds that the challenging macroeconomic environment, as well as the \u201congoing geopolitical uncertainties\u201d have weighed on its business development. The consequence, therefore, is that HHLA can not offset previously incurred losses during the extreme winter weather.<\/p>\n

A thick layer of snow, frozen overhead lines and frozen switches forced port operations in Hamburg, but also elsewhere in Europe, to stop in early January. Container handling and rail operations were impossible during that time, which heavily impacted<\/a> HHLA.<\/p>\n
