Super Typhoon Bavi was at peak intensity when it neared the islands on the night of July 5, bringing winds of 290 kilometers (180 miles) per hour, along with torrential rain and dangerous storm surge.<\/p>\n<p>This nighttime image, captured by the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.earthdata.nasa.gov\/data\/instruments\/viirs\" rel=\"noopener\">VIIRS<\/a>\u00a0(Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite) on the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/mission\/jpss\/\" rel=\"noopener\">NOAA-20<\/a>\u00a0satellite, shows Bavi\u2019s eye at about 15:30 Universal Time on July 5 (1:30 a.m. local time on July 6). Light from the Moon, which was in the <a href=\"https:\/\/catalina.lpl.arizona.edu\/moon-phases\/month\" rel=\"noopener\">waning gibbous phase<\/a>, illuminates the eyewall\u2019s western side. The eye passed over Rota, north of Guam, several hours after the image was acquired.<\/p>\n<p>Bavi became a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhc.noaa.gov\/aboutsshws.php#:~:text=Pacific%2C%20the%20term%20%22-,super%20typhoon,-%22%20is%20used%20for\" rel=\"noopener\">super typhoon<\/a> in the early hours of July 4 local time while tracking west over the warm ocean. Satellite observations indicated that sea surface temperatures were around <a href=\"https:\/\/go.nasa.gov\/4wtViNF\" rel=\"noopener\">30 degrees Celsius<\/a> (86 degrees Fahrenheit) in the region. Bavi was the <a href=\"https:\/\/yaleclimateconnections.org\/2026\/07\/super-typhoon-bavi-becomes-the-3rd-cat-5-of-2026\/\" rel=\"noopener\">third tropical cyclone<\/a> in 2026 to reach category 5 intensity on the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhc.noaa.gov\/aboutsshws.php\" rel=\"noopener\">Saffir-Simpson wind scale<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The typhoon caused extensive damage across Guam, Rota, and Saipan, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/weather.com\/2026\/07\/07\/storms\/hurricane\/super-typhoon-bavi-northern-marianas-guam-taiwan-china-forecast\" rel=\"noopener\">news reports<\/a>, downing power poles and lines; flooding roads and littering them with debris; and damaging buildings, including a water distribution station on Rota. U.S. Coast Guard crews worked to clear navigation hazards in the waterways around Guam and the Northern Marianas and reopen ports as dangerous marine conditions subsided, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.military.com\/coast-guard-works-to-reopen-guam-cnmi-ports-after-super-typhoon-bavi\" rel=\"noopener\">reports<\/a>. In the early afternoon, when the image above was captured, the <a href=\"https:\/\/forecast.weather.gov\/product.php?site=GUM&#038;issuedby=PQ1&#038;%23038;product=TCP&#038;%23038;format=CI&#038;%23038;version=2&#038;%23038;glossary=0\" rel=\"noopener\">National Weather Service<\/a> reported maximum sustained wind speeds of 250 kilometers (155 miles) per hour. Forecasts indicated the typhoon\u2019s track could bend northwest toward Taiwan, the Ryukyu Islands of southern Japan, and mainland China and weaken over the next several days.<\/p>\n<p>Writing in <a href=\"https:\/\/yaleclimateconnections.org\/2026\/07\/super-typhoon-bavi-becomes-the-3rd-cat-5-of-2026\/#:~:text=Bavi%20is%20the%20classic%20early-season%20super%20typhoon\" rel=\"noopener\">Yale Climate Connections<\/a>, meteorologist Jeff Masters said that Bavi is the type of storm that might be expected when a strong El Ni\u00f1o event is building, which is <a href=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/earth\/earth-observatory\/el-nino-is-underway\/\" rel=\"noopener\">currently the case<\/a>.
