I didn\u2019t know a single person who ever rode the bus. All I knew of trains was riding the steam train\u00a0*WA165*\u00a0out of the city \u2013 to Muriwai or Beach Loop \u2013 and then taking the bus to Wellington or Auckland.<\/p>\n<p>My mum talks about taking the train from\u00a0*Gisborne to Wellington*\u00a0when she was younger, and ever since I first heard that that was possible, I\u2019ve dreamed of a world where I could too.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m obsessed with trains. I don\u2019t so much care about the specifics of them \u2013 how they work and whatnot \u2013 but rather the possibility they represent.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>One day,\u00a0*one day*\u00a0I might be able to travel back to Tair\u0101whiti without cramming myself into a tiny Intercity bus seat for 11 hours, or feeling a stranger\u2019s thigh pressed sensually (and sweatily) against my own in the godawful baby plane that is the de Havilland Q300 twin-prop as it rattles its way up the East Coast.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The answer to that is: TRAIN!<\/p>\n<p>But it\u2019s not coming anytime soon.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>spent the first 18 years of my life living in Gisborne, a city where you can walk from one side to the other in 40 minutes.
