{"id":468997,"date":"2026-07-03T18:28:39","date_gmt":"2026-07-03T08:28:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/railuk.com\/?p=195729"},"modified":"2026-07-03T18:28:39","modified_gmt":"2026-07-03T08:28:39","slug":"essential-railway-upgrades-to-take-place-between-newport-and-shrewsbury","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/?p=468997","title":{"rendered":"Essential railway upgrades to take place between Newport and Shrewsbury"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/railuk.com\/travel\/essential-railway-upgrades-to-take-place-between-newport-and-shrewsbury\/\" title=\"Essential railway upgrades to take place between Newport and Shrewsbury\" rel=\"nofollow\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"485\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.railuk.co\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/03092706\/Newport-Station-drone-photo-Network-Rail-485x360.jpg\" class=\"webfeedsFeaturedVisual wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" style=\"display: block; margin-bottom: 5px; clear:both;max-width: 100%;\" link_thumbnail=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.railuk.co\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/03092706\/Newport-Station-drone-photo-Network-Rail-485x360.jpg 485w, https:\/\/cdn.railuk.co\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/03092706\/Newport-Station-drone-photo-Network-Rail-80x60.jpg 80w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 485px) 100vw, 485px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On the weekend of Saturday 11 July Network Rail will carry out essential engineering work to improve the safety and reliability of the railway between Newport and Shrewsbury.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The work will take place from 00:45 on Saturday 11 July until 05:00 on Monday 13 July, when all railway lines between Newport and Shrewsbury will be closed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During the closure, Network Rail engineers will deliver a range of improvements at locations including Pontrilas, Abergavenny and Ludlow, including:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Track renewals to improve reliability and reduce future delays.<\/li>\n<li>Vegetation management to maintain a safe and reliable railway.<\/li>\n<li>Repairs, repainting and inspections of railway structures.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The work forms part of Network Rail&#8217;s ongoing investment to maintain this important route for passengers and freight, helping to deliver a safer, more reliable railway for years to come.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Transport for Wales will operate rail replacement services between Newport and Shrewsbury to keep passengers moving, with a small number of late-night services also stopping at Cardiff Central.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These services will run roughly every 30 minutes on Saturday and hourly on Sunday. For each scheduled departure, two services will operate: one service calling at all stations along the route, and a faster service serving Shrewsbury, Hereford, Abergavenny, Cwmbran and Newport only.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Passengers are encouraged to check their journey before travelling by visiting National Rail or on the TfW website or app.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Martin Taylor, Chief Infrastructure Officer at Network Rail Wales and Borders, said: &#8220;This work is vital to maintaining and improving one of the key railway routes through Wales and Borders.
