Storm Isha brought widespread disruption to life across the United Kingdom and Ireland, with wind gusts frequently reaching speeds of over 100 miles per hour on January 21. Widespread, named storms have a significant impact on commercial aviation, and aircraft flying holding patterns, attempting approaches, and diverting to other airports were tracked by thousands of users on Flightradar24. \u2018Go arounds\u2019 (or aborted approaches to airports) were also common, with over <\/span>100 aircraft going around<\/span><\/a> on January 21 according to UK air traffic service provider NATS). We used our data to highlight some of the most interesting stats for flights arriving to airports in the UK and Republic of Ireland.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

A total of 83 aircraft inbound to the United Kingdom were diverted to other airports on January 21.<\/span><\/p>\n

The longest passenger flight diversions<\/span><\/h3>\n

LH2518<\/a><\/strong> \u2013 Lufthansa \u2013 Munich (MUC)<\/a> to Dublin (DUB)<\/a> \u2013 diverted back to Munich (MUC)<\/a> \u2013 distance 748 nautical miles.<\/p>\n

FR5911<\/strong><\/span><\/a> \u2013 Ryanair \u2013 <\/span>Lanzarote (ACE)<\/span><\/a> to <\/span>Dublin (DUB)<\/span><\/a> \u2013 diverted to <\/span>Bordeaux (BOD)<\/span><\/a> \u2013 distance 560 nautical miles. This aircraft had a total flight time of just over 4 hours.<\/span><\/p>\n

LS372<\/strong><\/span><\/a> \u2013 Jet2 \u2013 <\/span>Gran Canaria (LPA)<\/span><\/a> to <\/span>Belfast (BFS)<\/span><\/a> \u2013 diverted to <\/span>Paris (CDG)<\/span><\/a> \u2013 distance 470 nautical miles. Total flight time was 5 hours and 20 minutes.<\/span><\/p>\n

EW7460<\/strong><\/span><\/a> \u2013 Eurowings \u2013 <\/span>Hamburg (HAM)<\/span><\/a> to <\/span>London (LHR) <\/span><\/a>\u2013 diverted back to <\/span>Hamburg (HAM)<\/span><\/a> \u2013 distance of 404 nautical miles. Total flight time was 3 hours and 33 minutes.<\/span><\/p>\n

What about freighters?<\/span><\/h3>\n

The longest diversion encountered by a cargo aircraft was European Air Transport flight <\/span>QY452<\/span><\/a>. This aircraft diverted to <\/span>Leipzig (LEJ)<\/span><\/a> from <\/span>East Midlands Airport (EMA) <\/span><\/a>following a relatively short flight from <\/span>Brussels (BRU)<\/span><\/a>. Several other DHL freighters also made the same diversion. This is likely due to DHL having a substantial base at Leipzig.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

The award for \u2018Most Interesting Diversion\u2019 (or perhaps most frustrating) goes to Ryanair flight <\/span>FR633<\/span><\/a>. This flight from <\/span>Copenhagen (CPH)<\/span><\/a> to <\/span>Dublin (DUB)<\/span><\/a> initially diverted to <\/span>Manchester (MAN).<\/span><\/a> After a 4 hour wait, the aircraft made <\/span>another attempt to reach Dublin<\/span><\/a>, only to divert to <\/span>Liverpool (LPL)<\/span><\/a> after a 3-hour flight (just 40 miles from Manchester).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

EasyJet saw a total of 17 diversions on January 21. 35% of these aircraft were destined for <\/span>Bristol (BRS)<\/span><\/a>, diverting to airports including <\/span>London Gatwick (LGW) <\/span><\/a>and <\/span>Paris Charles de Gaulle (CDG)<\/span><\/a>. EasyJet\u2019s longest diversion was from London Gatwick to <\/span>Lyon Airport (LYS)<\/span><\/a>, a distance of 388 nautical miles.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Whilst EasyJet\u2019s flights to the UK were the most likely to be diverted, it was many of Ryanair\u2019s flights that attracted attention on Flightradar24. A total of 11 Ryanair aircraft bound for UK destinations were diverted on January 21.<\/span><\/p>\n

Wizzair\u2019s aircraft were bound for <\/span>London Gatwick (LGW)<\/span><\/a> and <\/span>London Luton (LTN)<\/span><\/a>. These were diverted as far afield as <\/span>Brussels (BRU)<\/span><\/a> and <\/span>Eindhoven (EIN)<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

All 8 BA Cityflyer aircraft diverted to London Stansted (STN)<\/a>. This is typical for LCY-based aircraft.\u00a0<\/p>\n

How many flights were canceled?<\/span><\/h3>\n

Whilst we can\u2019t be sure that any flight cancellations on January 21 were directly driven by Storm Isha, we can look at the overall trend of takeoff and landing cancellations at airports in the UK and Ireland.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Whilst <\/span>Dublin Airport (DUB)<\/span><\/a> and <\/span>London Heathrow Airport (LHR)<\/span><\/a> saw the highest numbers of cancellations, it\u2019s important to appreciate the proportion of cancellations at these larger hubs was relatively low. Whilst cancellations at Heathrow accounted for around 9% of movements, cancellations at <\/span>London City Airport (LCY)<\/span><\/a> accounted for 62% of all operations thanks to the larger UK domestic route network operating from the airport.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
