Widespread, named storms have a significant impact on commercial aviation, and aircraft flying holding patterns, attempting approaches, and diverting to other airports were tracked by thousands of users on Flightradar24. \u2018Go arounds\u2019 (or aborted approaches to airports) were also common, with over <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/nats.aero\/blog\/2024\/01\/storm-isha-air-traffic-control\/\"><span>100 aircraft going around<\/span><\/a><span> on January 21 according to UK air traffic service provider NATS). Flightradar24<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-6f6d2a2 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\">\n<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n<p><span>A total of 83 aircraft inbound to the United Kingdom were diverted to other airports on January 21.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span>The longest passenger flight diversions<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flightradar24.com\/data\/flights\/lh2518#33b3688e\">LH2518<\/a><\/strong> \u2013 Lufthansa \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flightradar24.com\/airport\/muc\">Munich (MUC)<\/a> to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flightradar24.com\/airport\/dub\">Dublin (DUB)<\/a> \u2013 diverted back to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flightradar24.com\/airport\/muc\">Munich (MUC)<\/a> \u2013 distance 748 nautical miles.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flightradar24.com\/data\/flights\/fr5911#33b33bd7\"><span><strong>FR5911<\/strong><\/span><\/a><span> \u2013 Ryanair \u2013 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flightradar24.com\/airport\/ace\"><span>Lanzarote (ACE)<\/span><\/a><span> to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flightradar24.com\/airport\/dub\"><span>Dublin (DUB)<\/span><\/a><span> \u2013 diverted to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flightradar24.com\/airport\/bod\"><span>Bordeaux (BOD)<\/span><\/a><span> \u2013 distance 560 nautical miles. This aircraft had a total flight time of just over 4 hours.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flightradar24.com\/data\/flights\/ls372#33b38ab4\"><span><strong>LS372<\/strong><\/span><\/a><span> \u2013 Jet2 \u2013 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flightradar24.com\/airport\/lpa\"><span>Gran Canaria (LPA)<\/span><\/a><span> to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flightradar24.com\/airport\/bfs\"><span>Belfast (BFS)<\/span><\/a><span> \u2013 diverted to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flightradar24.com\/airport\/cdg\"><span>Paris (CDG)<\/span><\/a><span> \u2013 distance 470 nautical miles. This aircraft diverted to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flightradar24.com\/airport\/lej\"><span>Leipzig (LEJ)<\/span><\/a><span> from <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flightradar24.com\/airport\/ema\"><span>East Midlands Airport (EMA) <\/span><\/a><span>following a relatively short flight from <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flightradar24.com\/airport\/bru\"><span>Brussels (BRU)<\/span><\/a><span>. Several other DHL freighters also made the same diversion. EasyJet\u2019s longest diversion was from London Gatwick to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flightradar24.com\/airport\/lys\"><span>Lyon Airport (LYS)<\/span><\/a><span>, a distance of 388 nautical miles.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Whilst EasyJet\u2019s flights to the UK were the most likely to be diverted, it was many of Ryanair\u2019s flights that attracted attention on Flightradar24. A total of 11 Ryanair aircraft bound for UK destinations were diverted on January 21.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Wizzair\u2019s aircraft were bound for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flightradar24.com\/airport\/lgw\"><span>London Gatwick (LGW)<\/span><\/a><span> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flightradar24.com\/airport\/ltn\"><span>London Luton (LTN)<\/span><\/a><span>. These were diverted as far afield as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flightradar24.com\/airport\/bry\"><span>Brussels (BRU)<\/span><\/a><span> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flightradar24.com\/airport\/ein\"><span>Eindhoven (EIN)<\/span><\/a><span>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>All 8 BA Cityflyer aircraft diverted to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flightradar24.com\/airport\/stn\">London Stansted (STN)<\/a>. This is typical for LCY-based aircraft.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h3><span>How many flights were canceled?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span>Whilst we can\u2019t be sure that any flight cancellations on January 21 were directly driven by Storm Isha, we can look at the overall trend of takeoff and landing cancellations at airports in the UK and Ireland.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-7b9e4a4\">\n<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-126c069 elementor-widget elementor-widget-image\">\n<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-acdbe1f elementor-widget elementor-widget-spacer\">\n<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n<div class=\"elementor-spacer\">\n<div class=\"elementor-spacer-inner\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-b9691a0\">\n<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-e06eeb2 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\">\n<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span>Whilst <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flightradar24.com\/airport\/dub\"><span>Dublin Airport (DUB)<\/span><\/a><span> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flightradar24.com\/airport\/lhr\"><span>London Heathrow Airport (LHR)<\/span><\/a><span> saw the highest numbers of cancellations, it\u2019s important to appreciate the proportion of cancellations at these larger hubs was relatively low.
